I have a simple, easy, nice five letter name. Complete randoms at work shorten it to a two letter name. This is starting to increasingly get on my nerves.

Close friends call me the shortened version, and not even all the time.

WIBU to tell ask them to call me by name?

I'm Sara. Various folk have called me Sa (sair), Saz, Sal, Sally (last 2 are recognised, old-fashioned diminutives), Sassa, Sarey - sigh, they spell it Sarah too - my parents' fault I suppose.

I only answer to Sara(h)

wellwellwell one your guesses is correct Wink

PrueDent · 05/07/2014 00:14

I'm very careful with people's names. I call them by the name they're introduced with. If I notice someone else calling them by another name I'll ask which they prefer. If I ask and they specify, or if they say they don't mind Cath or Catherine but hate Cathy then I'll take that on board.

Mil lengthens both my dd's names. Not by giving them a 'proper' name instead of a 'nickname'. Not by adding a y to it. But by sticking 'our' in front. Ourlauren and Ourjasmine*.

Gives. Me. The. Rage.

I'm known by my first initial. Family, friends, even my boss calls me it. I like it. I like that everyone has a special name for me «precious»

Ludways · 05/07/2014 00:48

There's a fair few Emma's on here, lol

ElephantsNeverForgive · 05/07/2014 00:48

I may have five letters on my BC, but if you use them all l will assume you are talking to someone else.

I have no idea why my parents put them there as they never used them (except to shout up the hall when I was in touble).

ElephantsNeverForgive · 05/07/2014 00:56

Correctinag people politely is fine, I have had to do it ocationally (as I say, I simply won't turn round if someone uses my full name).

But, please don't explode if it's a genuine mistake. It doesn't make you look professional if you snap, when called the standard shortening of your name totally in error.

I've known my cousin rather longer than I have known you and she made the opporsite choice the day she started school.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 05/07/2014 00:57

Sorry awful spelling.

StrawberryCheese · 05/07/2014 01:16

I also have a 5 letter, 2 syllable name. It can't be shortened, unless you want to refer to me as a mode of transport. So some people take the first two letters and then add the letter Z! Angry WTF?!

sykadelic · 05/07/2014 06:39

My husband doesn't respond well to shortening his name. His name is similar to Johnathon/John in that it's a name people shorten whether you like it or not. Depending on how well he knows you, he'll either call you a rude word, or a totally random name. When they comment, he'll either be nice about it, or rude about it.

It's just his "thing".

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 05/07/2014 06:41

Meerkat - one of my guesses is my name too!

WanderingTrolley1 · 05/07/2014 06:52

My DS's short, 4-lettered name is lengthened. By us.

EveDallasRetd · 05/07/2014 06:53

Someone I know called their son Lee, "because it can't be lengthened or shortened, he'll always just be Lee" however, within a year she was calling him by a nickname based on something he did...by the time he started at school he was "Lee, known as Nickname" and has been known by that name ever since (oh and the nickname gets shortened all the time too). Umm, fail?

Somersetlady · 05/07/2014 07:00

I'm a Jacqueline never Jackie. Despite repeatedly being told until I gave up trying my MIL still calls me Jackie and introduces me as Jackie so her friends obviously do too. If someone called out jackie in the street i wouldnt even pick up on it to turn round as IT'S NOT MY NAME never has been and never will be.

i also get asked to spell it at least a couple of times a week and have done for the last 35 years if ever I cant be found on an electronic database such as bank/ doctor etc it's because the operator cant spell my name. Common attempts include:

Jacklyn
Jackline
Jacqline

LizzieMint · 05/07/2014 07:02

Oddly, I have a long name and am always known as a short version of it (not hard to guess what it is!) but I really couldn't care less what people call me.
I did give all my DCs short names though cos filling in forms with a long name is a PITA.

WookieCookiee · 05/07/2014 07:17

Hello Caz Grin
My birth name has 7 letters and is only used by the bank

Benny/Benjamin I d

cindydog · 05/07/2014 07:18

I have a 4 letter name and it is shortened to 1 letter! DD is called Dawn and she is often called Dawny.

WookieCookiee · 05/07/2014 07:18

I don't think people are talking about him when they use his full name!

sassytheFIRST · 05/07/2014 07:42

I have a two syllable name with no real shortening but it doesn't stop people. Sarah becomes Sair - ugly IMO. But no biggie really.

My kids both have names with LOTS of accepted and pretty shortenings though!

wtffgs · 05/07/2014 08:34

Meh I have a 5-letter, one syllable first name so people change my surname instead Confused Not so much as I hurtle towards 50 Grin

Tell them in a nice,non-huffy way.
