Who was BU? Me, roadworks man or both of us?

My route to visit my parents is almost solely on country lanes

There are usually several road works on my way. So, temporary traffic lights are in place before them. Each time, myself and other vehicles have used them as you would any regular traffic light. No problems.
Except today… usual spot for works has moved up the lane a bit. Red light is on my side of road, so I wait. I am at the very front of a small trail of traffic. Roadworks man starts beckoning me with his hands, to move forward i.e. go through the red light.
I ignore, as I don't want to jump a red light. I'm out of work, I've recently had a £100 fine (from a similar country lane) and it crippled me to pay it. Cars are behind me, but no one is beeping. He keeps on beckoning. In the end I give in and move on, light is still red...
As I go past him, he gesticulates… hand movements to side of his head (indicating i'm not 'right in the head') and of his face. Last time I saw that was on an 8 yr old boy , if you are of a certain age like me (43) and watched Blue Peter as a kid you'll know what I mean. (not PC and not nice, but it was of its time, typical school kid thing in my time)
Except you don't expect this decades on, from a man of approx late 50s- early 60s!
So, who was BU?
Is it ever ok to jump a red light? Was I BU to initially not move when he was beckoning me? Does a road worker have the right to tell you to move on through (red) lights? I am confused!
(My father once did this when lights weren't working. He'd been waiting ages. A policeman promptly appeared and fined him. So you can see my hesitation. )
I've got to go this route all week as well!

because a/ the contradiction of a red light (if not working, switch off!)
b/ risk of getting another fine when you've just had one, does make one cautious!
however, I know now! it is not something I've encountered before, and i don't , by any measures , have a sheltered life!
thanks for all the replies

What disgrace said. It is illegal to drive thro a red light, if he had beckoned me through on red I' have waited too. If the lights were broken they should have been switched off or covered.

So I'd have complained to his manager about thar in the first instance.

Rude gestures? Definitely get straight on the phone. Construction industry is working very hard to shed its hairy arsed sexist image. Shit like that sets us all back years.

alltoomuchrightnow · 03/07/2014 16:50

I didn't get a name of the company and they weren't there yesterday.
Also , UK drivers are usually v quick to beep , often shout out etc if you are holding up traffic, there was none of that coming from behind me.
I drive down this stretch of road frequently, there are always temp traffic lights and people using them correctly whether road workers present or not. Even at night, with no one about. I mean, how do you know it's not a trap? It's an easy way to get fined after all,

Another point (that makes me cautious). apart from my recent fine.. I once went through roadworks at night on m-way at normal speed rather than reduced, because there was no traffic and no workers. And yes i got fined for that.
So it's all rather contradictory and confusing, but I stand correct
Trust the hairy arsed offensive man Hmm After all, he won't get the fine will he. But this AIBU, i did ask, and I obviously was too cautious, with good reason though

Someone I know started driving through temporary roadworks contraflow when "beckoned" to do so by the traffic signaller, and promptly met a whole host of traffic coming the other way towards her. Her car was hit from behind when she stopped. It was his mistake, but he wasn't the one who got into trouble or ended up paying for the damage.

sanfairyanne · 03/07/2014 17:13

presumably that was the person behind who had to pay?

DottyDooRidesAgain · 03/07/2014 17:37

YABU.

He was also BU for being rude.

Just a question OP what would you have done at say light controlled crossroads if the lights had been broken and all were on red?

I only ask this as it happened to me yesterday when I was with my non driving DM. She was sat in the passenger seat crossing herself and she's not even Catholic the silly mare! Grin

alltoomuchrightnow · 03/07/2014 18:56

if i realised they were broken i'd have gone through. (which is what got my father a fine). But i'd have felt anxious!
that's awful auntjane2 and kind of proves my point

I went through and treated it very much like a roundabout giving way to the right. However my DM was not happy and basically thought I should have sat there until they were fixed Confused
