Room 101 ..... FYI

First time here on Aibu be gentle.

Am I the only one who thinks when texting or even emailing the use of FYI is perfectly acceptable but mid conversation in a meeting why would you FYI a sentence!!

Surely an "o by the way" or "just so you know" is a more professional face to face way if talking to people?

Almost riles me as much as 'networking' and 'touching base'

Hah I bet the person also "parks" an idea

Or "pushes it back"

Or thinks about "plucking low hanging fruit"

Maybe they "run an idea up the flagpole to see who salutes it"

All REAL

WorraLiberty · 01/07/2014 15:34

I wouldn't mind betting this person 'sources' their food and 'reaches out' to colleagues Grin

Xcountry · 01/07/2014 15:39

Ranting maybe? I walked into the pub the otherday (to pick up BiL who had asked to be collected from outside the pub) and said to BiL "FYI outside the pub constitutes to the other side of the door" and left in a stroppy huff, Probably wasn't 'cool' (he is 20) but it did embarrass the shit out of him in front of his friends and the whole pub which is exactly what I was aiming for.

Angie1978 · 01/07/2014 15:49

To FYI in full on strop mode is perfectly acceptable in my book

But coming from a gelled haired tie pin wearing salesman mid sentence with his head slightly cocked to one side makes me want to drop kick him in the knackers

My pet hate is
''I know!!! lets get them to do it themselves and then they will ''gain ownership of the task and do it better!

YIPEEEEEEEEE!

It should be rephrased :
How to manipulate and patronise people

Gain Ownership should definitely go into Room 101, along with the idiots who use the phrase.

waterducksback · 01/07/2014 16:01

Also hate FYI

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 01/07/2014 16:03

I had a manager who always asked for work items by saying "do it by return"
Took me weeks to work out he meant please do this now and send it straight back to me.

He was an arse, at least when he talked about "blue sky thinking" and "pushing the envelope" I knew what he was on about.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 01/07/2014 16:05

Oh oh oh and the phrase "it will be good for your profile"

Translation "hey, I have a crap time consuming and completely thankless task for you to do"

Goldmandra · 01/07/2014 16:08

WTF is "plucking low hanging fruit" supposed to mean, grabbing someone by the balls perhaps? Confused

waterducksback · 01/07/2014 16:10

The worst is when they've just come back from a management course and try out their new arshole type sayings on the staff.

It takes weeks for things to get back to normal.

(as you can guess I'm a really nice awkward employee ) Grin

waterducksback · 01/07/2014 16:11

I was wondering about the 'plucking low hanging fruit'.
The mind boggles.

JennyOnTheBlocks · 01/07/2014 16:12

So, let's drop the ball in here and see who runs with it

caruthers · 01/07/2014 16:12

We should kick this thread into the long grass.

MyFairyKing · 01/07/2014 16:28

Whenever I hear FYI, I think of Ross in Friends.
"Efff.....whhyy....eye"

Anyone else? Grin

myusernameis · 01/07/2014 16:42

Saw on Facebook recently: "I finally sourced this song!" That really annoyed me.

myusernameis · 01/07/2014 16:45

Also remember at work once being told "I want you to own this project."

I had absolutely no idea what that was supposed to mean. Eventually I realised it meant he wanted me to do the hard work for his project with none of the praise or recognition. Thankfully I've cottoned on to that sort of thing now so can tell people where to shove their 'ownership'!

Thisvehicleisreversing · 01/07/2014 17:13

I work in a small supermarket yet we still get this ridiculous bollocks from the management.

"could you just 'work' the boxed delivery" meaning "put that stuff out"
Or "could you 'action' that delivery" meaning "put that stuff out"

We earn minimum wage, we don't need the corporate speak.

waterducksback · 01/07/2014 19:12

myusernameis - Saying ''I want you to own this project''
is the same as the ''I want you to Gain Ownership'' rubbish.

Same crap - different packaging!

Eveningsaregettingshorter · 01/07/2014 19:56

I had no idea what FYI meant, had to email my boss back and ask him to explain. I know someone who says 'ballpoint figure' rather than 'ballpark figure'.
