Yesterday we took our dd to a local theme park.

Parked car early morning....Car park is grassy and manicured with plants and grass.

The park is kept generally pristine with employees constantly picking litter....sweeping etc....

Had a great time returned to car....

Cars all parked in lines.... As we approached ours I saw the car next door throw about 3 things from the window.

A bulging soiled nappy
An empty wipe pack
Various wrappers

I said loudly 'think you've dropped something' they carried on reversing and just laughed.

As we packed up car ....the litter pickers came around and I pointed to the pile and said 'not ours....awful what people leave for you to find'

'Its about the tenth nappy in this car park today....we are used to that ....get far worse' Blush

I started a mini rant. Dp agreed was vile but not worth getting annoyed over.

AIBU to get visibly annoyed about this. Do any of you?

Yes, littering really annoys me. Even people chucking sweet wrappers makes me tut. Selfish and lazy behaviour.

MammaTJ · 01/07/2014 09:17

I hate litter louts. I was brought up never to drop litter and have brought up my DC to be the same. DD even picks up other peoples litter and puts in the nearest (never more than a few feet away) bin!

YANBU!

Numanoid · 01/07/2014 09:20

YANBU, that's disgusting, and unfair on the litter pickers. I also hate the line "it keeps people in a job" as an excuse.

whilewildeisonmine · 01/07/2014 09:21

It's awful. I'm afraid there is so much rubbish on the roadsides sometimes that I've sort of become desensitised to it and barely notice it's there. DP is not from this country and he still can't believe how people can treat their surroundings with such little respect. People aren't even ashamed to just dump bags of litter they've collected from their cars on the roadside. YANBU.

MsVestibule · 01/07/2014 09:26

I hate littering, really, really, hate it. I would have been tempted to throw it at the retreating car, but as the type of people who think it's OK to dump a nappy are complete twats, that probably wouldn't be a good idea...

PPaka · 01/07/2014 09:41

I was at Wimbledon yesterday and v shocked and disappointed to see how much picnic stuff rubbish was left behind on Henman hill.
Lots of it was waitrose too!

ithoughtofitfirst · 01/07/2014 09:53

I once saw something similar at a car boot sale. Nappy again. I stopped. Looked the woman up and down in disbelief and she just shot me the most 'go on then I dare you to say something' kind of look. I actually felt kind of sorry for her for completely lacking any kind of class. Bless.

Only1scoop · 01/07/2014 09:55

MsV

I felt close to the point of hurling said nappy at retreating car. I described feeling irked....actually more like enraged....just didn't want to put 'enraged' in my first ever AIBU Grin

Glad these things annoy all of you also in whatever way....don't think litterbug was a mumsnetter now Wink

Not dropping litter is etched in my soul. It was my DM's absolute pet hate. Woe betide us if we dropped so much as a fingernail sized bit of foil of our Refreshers.

WanderingAway · 01/07/2014 10:13

I hate litter louts. I always clear up after myself.

I do however feel that there are not enough bins out and about. Three should be a bin on every second lamp post on every street instead of one on every second street.

snowgirl1 · 01/07/2014 10:21

YANBU, that's disgusting. I hate littering. My DH hates it too and if he sees people throwing the cigarette butts or litter out of their car while we're driving, he'll start honking the horn at them. Part of me is proud that he's willing to make a point, but I worry someone is going to get out of their car one day and attack him.

I have heard of someone who, while in stationary traffic, saw another driver throw a cigarette butt out of their window and the person who saw it got out of their car, picked the butt up and threw it back into the car it had come from saying 'I think you dropped something'. Cue lots of panicked shouting as the smoker tried to find the burning cigarette butt. I'd love to do something like that, but it's just not worth the risk of getting thumped or worse.

blueballoon79 · 01/07/2014 10:25

I hate this too.
I used to work voluntarily on a conservation site. People would use the site which was primarily maintained by volunteers and would throw litter and vandalise the place.
Every day we'd go out litter picking and would regularly return with over ten refuse sacks full to the brim.
It disgusted me.

CoffeeTea103 · 01/07/2014 10:32

I hate litter too, but I can only do my part and not litter. To who and why did you go on to rant?

Labtest7 · 01/07/2014 10:37

My bag, pockets and car are usually bulging with wrappers at the end of the day as I will not drop litter. YANBU its horrible and infuriates me.

ConferencePear · 01/07/2014 10:42

I find the amount of litter around the place quite shocking.
I went to Ikea at Nottingham and the slip roads off the M1 at junction 26 was an absolute disgrace. I wonder if we are getting worse at throwing it out or is it because there is no public money ?
Whatever the reason I wish people would just stop doing it.

ajandjjmum · 01/07/2014 10:45

snowgirl - I've always wanted to do that when I've seen people sling stuff out of stationery cars, but never had the guts!

Only1scoop · 01/07/2014 10:45

Coffee.... I went on a mini rant of 'isn't this disgusting' ....To the valet team who were picking up people's crap ....literally.

I just thought a nice day out was momentarily marred by seeing the substandard vileness and laziness of some lazy creatures. Who obviously take it for granted that others will clear up after them.

Only lasted minutes though and certainly felt better when called in at lovely pub and sat outside with Wine on the way home.

MsApprehension · 01/07/2014 10:49

I was also taught never to litter and I never do.

I wonder if anyone will admit that they do sometimes litter?

HappyAgainOneDay · 01/07/2014 10:49

I was in the front passenger seat of a car once - didn't really know the driver. He threw his cigarette butt out of his window and the wind blew it back in through the back passenger's window on his side. It landed in the bouffant hairstyle of my school friend's mother and we began to smell the burning.

I hate it when I see smokers just drop their fag ends anywhere and tread on them - sometimes in a pub or similar. They think it's all right if they try to put them out this way but, smokers (are you listening?) it's still litter. I wonder if we'll now have smokers defending their dropping of cigarette ends.

littlewoollypervert · 01/07/2014 10:49

Snowgirl there's a story that Brendan Behan did that years ago!

TheFairyCaravan · 01/07/2014 10:51

I hate litter dropping.

We live in a really pretty, rural area. There is a MaccyD's on the outskirts of the nearest 'big town' and when you drive back round the lanes there are always burger boxes, cups and bags that have been thrown from passing cars. It really annoys me!

littledrummergirl · 01/07/2014 11:02

I generally dont like litter and refuse to leave rubbish behind, however I have left crusts, ham, apple cores, nuts and other edible things. I have also thrown apples cores out of the car onto the side of dual carriage ways. I generally hide these in long grass on trees and in bushes, not on a green space.

(prepares for flaming)

I figure that the wildlife will remove them. Anything else is a huge no.

Lizzardface · 01/07/2014 11:47

Littering is uncivilised. Imo.

Andrewofgg · 01/07/2014 12:06

If the schools required pupils to pick up all litter regardless of who had dropped it and had a litter rota at lunchtime on which everyone took a turn we could build a non-littering generation. It's worth a try.

Too late for today's litterbugs who are beyond help and beneath contempt.
