... to not understand DS's school report

Long story short, DS is in Y1, we live abroad but he goes to a British school. I am not British so not used to the system, DH is British but away at the moment so can't elighten me (not that he would, necessarily).
Got annual school report today. It's quite long and goes by subject (literacy, math, sciene, art etc) and gives a rating of "above/below/in line with British National Curriculum" for each, then a small para of text to say what DS can do or enjoys (eg he enjoyed exploring magnets)
Almost all of his ratings are "in line".
AIBU to feel that this report doesn't really tell me much about DS's abilities?
There is no indication of whether he is finding it esay or if he needs to work really hard to achieve the "in line", I can't tell what end of the spectrum of "in line" he is..... they don't give any specific areas or suggestions for improvement or support needed....
What does all this mean?
Should I take it that he is doing very well? Or is he just very average? Or just coping?
Or am I plain BU for even asking these questions?

The report is probably based purely on test results and marking and not him as an individual. If you're interested in how he's doing generally, you'll have to make an appointment with the school I should think.

Well the 'in line' suggests that he is currently average within his year group. Achieving expected targets for his age but not particularly exceeding them.

The paragraph below should tell you if he if struggling or coasting.

It should comment in how hard he tries, if he needs support or if he could put more effort in.
Apart from maths, literacy and perhaps science I would not necessarily expect a repot to comment on specific areas. There's just not space! The literacy and numberacy ones should give some targets though.
If your concerned you need to contact the school for clarification.

I write all my repost based on the individual but there is only so much you can fit into 4 sentences!

It is likely to be a cut and paste exercise with the odd comment thrown in . As long as he is performing broadly in line it is probably fine and you really don't need to worry. The school may well have a bell curve measure with so many falling into the "in line" level so many above , so many below. However I would say that many overseas schools don't benchmark against NC etc in the same way as schools might in Britain, which even then can be variable, and it may well be misleading to assume standards and teaching methods are comparable and consistent. If you want more info about his particular strengths and weaknesses and more constructive comment you need to have a dialogue with his teacher.

Thank you.
I did think about asking for a meeting with the teacher but tomorrow is their last school day so not sure if they will agree.
I also don't want to come accross as a "mumzilla" - that's why I wanted to get some advice on how I should read this report
