To think that biting someone is surely assault not a big joke?

Am I the only one who thinks that biting someone is clearly assault? Even ABH.

It's a tough subject for me as I was in an abusive relationship and one of the things he would do mostly was bite really hard in temper and even draw blood. This added to me not not believing it was really DV and also to people (even the police) frowning in disbelief.

All I hear at work is people laughing and joking about that footballer biting, if he was punching other players I'm sure that it would be taken more seriously.

I don't understand how he hasn't lost his job as I'm positive that if I bit a work colleague then I would.

One word ... Money. Lots and lots of money. Stinks doesn't it.

bobbywash · 30/06/2014 16:17

No you're not alone in thinking that.

However generally speaking rules on a football pitch do not reflect real life. Also the fact that as a footballer he's "worth" 40 - 60 million has a significant bearing

AMumInScotland · 30/06/2014 16:24

You're right, it's assault. And if he did it off the football pitch, he'd be in court for it.

But because he is worth lots of money to his country and his club, he's not going to lose his job for it. At least FIFA have given him a reasonable ban for it though, which shows they are taking it seriously.

I can see why it might be difficult for you, but have you tried challenging the idiots at work who are laughing about it? Just frowning and saying something fairly neutral can sometimes get people to think about what they are saying and why it isn't actually that funny.

Hurr1cane · 30/06/2014 16:48

It's horrific, and now people are saying "he must have autism" because he's bit someone three times!

Bloody ignorant sods.

He should be in prison. Or sacked at the very least. It's not funny.

Pyjamaramadrama · 30/06/2014 16:57

Oh I do challenge it by saying that I think it's disgusting and is assault but this is met by more laughter and jokes so I switch off from it after a bit.

As for people saying he's mentally ill or autistic well I'd be very offended by that if I were mentally ill.

Have you read the other threads about it - there are at least 2 very long ones. Both of them condemn his actions, there are some jokes/cartoons in there, at his expense, no-one is laughing at what he did or passing it off as 'just football'.

So, depending on what you AIBU actually is... yes/no (delete as applicable Smile)

MuddlingMackem · 30/06/2014 19:09

YANBU, but you're obviously very unfortunate in the company you're forced to keep if they really believe it's funny.

I still think that his victims should be reporting the attacks to the police, and they'd have to investigate. Bet that would give him a shock!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/06/2014 19:17

It is assault although I've not spoken to anyone who thinks it's funny, are you referring to the daft virals?

On the street, bites and some of the tackles would be a police caution. On the pitch, they get away with it and I've seen some dreadful tackles.

halamadrid · 30/06/2014 19:35

Nobody at my workplace thinks it's a joke.
