To ask if you know the signs of sepsis?

This news story has been in the press, on the radio/TV this week because Sam, the son of friends of ours, died of sepsis. He shouldn't have.

Chatting to other friends, it seems as though very many people have never heard of sepsis although most are aware of the symptoms of meningitis. One of the reasons the Morrish family have gone public with their experience is to raise awareness of sepsis; Sam wouldn't have died if he'd received antibiotics.

The Sepsis Trust has lots of information, including this symptoms checklist.

Bump

rallytog1 · 30/03/2015 11:14

Bump. My MIL died from sepsis and my dd was born with it. Thankfully dd's was spotted and treated very quickly and she made a full and quick recovery.

Thank you for posting. More people need to be aware.

blackheartsgirl · 30/03/2015 20:17

Dp had an abcess at the top of his leg over christmas a few years back but didnt make a fuss. I took him to the doctors the day after boxing day as he was violently shivering, with a temp and I just thought he had flu! We both thought oh he'll be sent away with antibiotics but the doctor took one look at him and packed him straight off to hospital. He had emergency surgery that afternoon, iv antibiotics and 3 days in hospital and district nurse for 2 weeks afterwards. It could have been so much worse. Was that the beginning of sepsis? or just a nasty infection? I do wonder now

WetFishAndOnionRings · 30/03/2015 20:31

I nearly died of septic pneumonia last christmas. I spent 3 days thinking I just had a bad cold.
Afterwards, when talking to people, it really astounded me how few people actually knew of sepsis.

TheBakeryQueen · 31/03/2015 10:44

I bumped this thread because MIL was diagnosed with Sepsis on Saturday. She just thought she had a chest infection & had been putting off going to the GP. She actually had Pneumonia & Sepsis. She is doing very well, because it was spotted so early. From what I've read, sadly, it goes undiagnosed too often.

Stop spamming and digging up zombie threads Hmm

sugar21 · 29/02/2016 16:45

Yes I know the signs of sepsis very very well.
My dd aged 17 months died from meningitis and sepsis. Please read my current threads

GrimDamnFanjo · 29/02/2016 16:50

Oh dear. Zombie thread reactivated to promote business :(

leedy · 01/03/2016 11:48

:( though it is at least a useful thread. I only really became properly aware of what exactly sepsis was when Savita Halappanavar died of sepsis while (horrendously managed due to our ghastly "pro-life" laws) miscarrying here a few years ago. I then became rather more personally aware of the symptoms a few weeks ago when I had what I thought was just a stomach bug and ended up on three different IV antibiotics for over a week (didn't actually end up with sepsis but my temp/heart rate/bloods showed I was heading in that direction and the hospital staff were taking no chances).

SE13Mummy · 19/11/2016 00:23

I know this thread is a zombie but it seems appropriate to bump it given one MNer's recent run in with sepsis.

My son almost died of sepsis a few years ago. Our local hospital recognised the signs immediately- they were bloody amazing! Needless to say, all of my friends and family are very aware of the signs to look out for.

DustyMaiden · 19/11/2016 01:25

My DF was in hospital three weeks ago with sepsis the nurses said there has been an increased amount of people with it this year following a nasty virus that is doing the rounds.

SpringBail · 19/11/2016 07:57

I've had sepsis a few times and it took a good while for me to recognise the symptoms but I'm thankful I know them now. My worst was last year was when I was running a fever and felt terrible and like I was going to die. I ended up going to a+e. I spent time in ICU and HDU and went into septic shock with the doctors pumping me full of antibiotics and spent 3 months in hospital having to relearn how to walk but I'm so grateful to the care that was given to me and know things could have been worse.

And sugar.

DigestiveMuncher · 19/11/2016 19:07

Brilliant post!!

I am aware (thankfully) of the symptoms of sepsis as my little girl has a broviac line and there terrible for getting infected & as it goes into her main vain it's a worry & needs antibiotics asap!
We have to carry around a "passport" which is basically a folder that contains information on my daughters medical condition and what the symptoms are and what needs to happen (it doesn't always work and they never read it but it's a reassurance)
I would of never of been able to leave the hospital with her if they had not of drilled the symptoms in to my head every day but I'm so glad they did.

Sometimes I think they should educate more on this as not everyone knows which can then lead to heartbreaking consequences. Awareness definitely needs to be raised. I think your friends are amazingly brave for all they have been through and I am so sorry that they had to loose their son. Flowers

AddictedtoSnickers · 19/11/2016 19:37

Thanks for bumping this OP

Julju · 19/11/2016 19:52

So sad.

My DS is ill at the moment - vomiting, diarrhoea, not eating, not himself, and has just developed a nasty looking rash. While I'm sure he's fine (will call 111 just to be on the safe side) googling his symptoms didn't bring up sepsis as a possibility. It's been on my radar since I heard about William, the 1 year old who sadly died, whose lovely mum has been doing lots of work making sepsis more widely known but it isn't even something I'd considered

Piratepete1 · 19/11/2016 19:56

My Dsis nearly died from sepsis whilst undergoing chemo. She had a central line and developed an infection in it. Only symptom was her looking very very pale and having a strangely low temperature.

SpeckledyBanana · 19/11/2016 19:58

It killed someone close to me. We thought he had flu.

DigestiveMuncher · 19/11/2016 19:59

Piratepete having a central line in is so scary when it comes down to them getting infected Sad

thegirlinthecar · 19/11/2016 20:08

I do now , thanks op . So sorry about your friends son.

SE13Mummy · 20/11/2016 00:17

So sorry to hear about so many of you having lost loved ones as a result of sepsis.
