Do you ever worry about finding yourself in the public spotlight?*

Say, you won the Euromillions, or your DH turned out to be a secret mafia boss wanted in 27 countries, or your sibling was a mass murderer or married a premiership footballer...

If for any reason you found yourself of interest to the papers, do you worry that tabloid hacks would search your MN posts to dig up dirt?

*I am aware this is a tad far-fetched.

I do worry about finding myself in the spotlight, but not because they might look at my mumsnet posts, just because I might get caught picking my nose or something.

ThirdPoliceman · 28/06/2014 22:47

No. Never worried about this.

(Until now.....!)

SirNoel · 28/06/2014 22:48

Not MN stuff no, couldn't give much of a monkeys about that....BUT yes, it has crossed my mind that should I be launched into the public eye for any reason, there'd be a couple of people who could dish some dirt Blush

MrsVamos · 28/06/2014 22:49

No. I am far too dull for people to try to find any dirt on me.

I don't say anything of interest to anyone either, really. Grin

best piece of advice I was ever given was 'Never regret anything, for those are the moments you'll look back on and remember you truly lived'. And if the day ever comes, that will be my press release!!!

Bunbaker · 28/06/2014 23:11

No.

I googled my name the other day and then went into images. I just got pictures of a tennis player with the same surname. I guess I am safe from the media.

Birdsgottafly · 28/06/2014 23:16

I'm glad that Social Media wasn't around when we had the death of a baby in the family and the patents (my close relatives) were accused of murder.

The intrusion etc was bad enough, but only involved being followed, pictures and phone calls.

Last year when we had an incident in the family, we all had a FB blackout, just in case things escalated.

We all work in Social Care, so generally are careful, but that doesn't stop the made up crap.

If I won the lottery, I would have to leave the UK, or lie very low, I have thought about it.

Birdsgottafly · 28/06/2014 23:18

Just to add, my youngest DD seems to be the only person in the UK with her name, we have an unusual (in the UK) surname and I have given her an uncommon first name.

The same applies to my eldest.

Birdsgottafly · 28/06/2014 23:22

It might sound far fetched that this would happen to you but all you need is a tragic event and a journalist that wants his moment of fame.

There were journalists defending the phone tapping and saying that it's a made up law that should be challenged.

foslady · 28/06/2014 23:43

Many years ago we had something that chucked part of my family in the press mire. Totally agree Birds- the press didn't give shit about how ill/old/removed from the immediate you are, so long as they get the story. Absolutely horrible when they come after you on a negative,

Shockers · 29/06/2014 08:38

I wonder if you could stay anonymous with a big lottery win. Some people would know... bank staff, Camelot staff... would it get leaked somehow?

Flipflops7 · 29/06/2014 08:44

Yes, OP, I am manically private and understand exactly what you mean. I was trying to work out how I would manage the big Euromillions win the other day. Fortunately (?) it wasn't me :)

SeattleGraceMercyDeath · 29/06/2014 08:46

Plus the new house, car, helicopter etc might give it away!

YourBrotherInLaw · 29/06/2014 08:48

I remember my friends talking about this sort of thing when Big Brother first started and one of the boys we were at uni with did a kiss and tell on a contestant he had a ons with on holiday the previous year. I'd be mortified. Grin

Shockers · 29/06/2014 08:49

When I win, I'm not going to touch the money for at least 6 months, to throw the media off the scent Wink.
