I cannot bear anyone using:

Text rather than texted

I was sat rather than I was sitting

It sounds so ignorant!

An American expression I'm always puzzled by is "I could care less" which means, I think, "I could not care less". Does anyone know where the "not" has gone?

SconeRhymesWithGone · 29/06/2014 14:12

It's just careless speech LeBear. Many Americans do say "I couldn't care less."

FloozeyLoozey · 29/06/2014 15:56

I only pointed out the op's misuse of punctuation as she is criticising other people's use of English. I found it rather hypocritical!

merrymouse · 29/06/2014 15:59

Grammatically it is correct. I am blue. I am green. I am tan.

phantomnamechanger · 29/06/2014 16:09

the one I hate is that people don't even stop at saying text instead of texted. it's now all TEX Shock
"he tex me blah blah blah so I tex him blah blah blah"

It'll be te next

KarlWrenbury · 29/06/2014 16:09

A child I teach told me that he doesn't like "regular movies". For shame.

merrymouse · 29/06/2014 16:14

Tan is a colour. Black and Tan. American tan. You can also say I am very brown.

magimedi · 29/06/2014 16:38

The one I hate most is when you meet a friend & ask them how they are & they reply: "Good".

I am not asking after your moral welfare, I am asking after your health.

The reply is: Well, thankyou".

Iseesheep · 29/06/2014 18:13

"Can I get a latte" is nothing in comparison to "I'll do a latte". Heard in Costa this very week.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 29/06/2014 18:31

I agree with you Iseesheep on the "do" thing. I don't know if it is particularly American, but I have noticed it a lot lately: people ordering in a restaurant, "I'll do the stuffed pork chops." It sounds like they are going to have sex with them or something.

BankHolidayRain · 29/06/2014 18:39

It's the masterchef contestants commanding people to "enjoy" that I can't cope with.

shobby · 29/06/2014 18:49

Referring to the tan/tanned debate, surely a tan (as in sun tan) is a result of the process of being tanned (like tanning an animal hide) not a colour? Making the comment "He is blonde and tan" incorrect, should be "He is blonde and tanned"....and I'll have his phone number thank you very much.....

Can't stand the whole "How are you....good" thing either. They also often fail to ask how you are as well which is just impolite!

ithoughtofitfirst · 29/06/2014 18:52

Merrymouse I thought it annoyed me for about 2 minutes until I thought about it and realised that it makes sense to say it that way. Using your logic I mean. I know absolutely sweet FA about grammar n shit though.
