AIBU that this story has infuriated me beyond words? Rape is horrific and false claims are probably pretty rare, but this does NOT excuse false accusers from facing the full force of the law. False accusations destroy people's lives and surely cannot be tolerated by a civilised society!?

don't real rapists get less time in prison? real rapists don't pay compensation either do they Sad

while she should be punished i don't see what this will achieve in the long run people hate to report rape as it is,now someone is publicly being demonised for reporting and retracting. if you report and retract (which is what happens in some rape cases) ie because you can't face the courts you try and retract then they think your a lier and then you're on the hook for perverting the course of justice

i cant see the logic in PUBLICALLY doing this all rape cases should be kept under wraps until the trial is over no names named nothing unless more evidence is needed i hate the name and shame culture

I think it was fair, she didn't just report and retract - she admitted it was a fucking lie to get out of doing her exams didn't she? I'm sure I've read about this woman before whilst her trial was ongoing. She should be forced to pay compensation to the man too because he was locked up for over a month because of her lies and prevented from seeing his children.

It seemed incredibly malicious and as Xcountry said, she didn't accuse and retract. The person she accused had alibis and timesheets to prove he couldn't have been where she said he was. I wonder what would have happened if he hadn't had that proof Hmm

WAR are treading a fine line and either this time they've fallen on the wrong side or the Guardian reporting hasn't explained their position clearly enough. WAR could be arguing that when prosecutions fall apart, the accuser is rarely charged with wasting police time. However (in rape cases) the conviction rate for wasting police time against the conviction rate for rape is less than 1%. Or WAR could be arguing that a custodial sentence isn't the best response in this case. Or they could be saying the sentence is too long. I think they should have made it much clearer that what they weren't saying was that you can't prosecute for false claims in case it frightens people from making legitimate accusations.

I loved her defense - she did it cos of her poor performance, yet she was in the top 10%... how does that work? Oh, yes, she lied and cheated and caused an innocent man a lot of terror and heart ache - he was accused of being a peadophile and was isolated for a time. And you can bet there will always be people who believe the lies......

The judge's sentence reflected the sad fact that her actions will have helped make it harder for real victims to get a fair hearing, that she used her knowledge of the law to seriously damage the life of an innocent man. How WAR can argue that a harsh sentence from LYING about a rape will put women off reporting real rape is beyond me. They seem to have lost the plot in a fug of the woolliest most liberal of thinking!

The reason so many rape victims do not go to the police is because of women like this one. women fear they wont be believed because so many people have lied about being raped. whether it was out of guilt for cheating or some other reason.

I have an ex-friend who was caught cheating by her long term boyfriend. she claimed the guy she cheated with had raped her. she burst out crying/shaking saying she was just so so scared, that she froze. Her boyfriend wouldn't listen and went straight home. she called me and asked me to go round. I felt bad for her and although i had my doubts (she had cheated on him with over 10 different men just that i knew of) i encouraged her to phone the police, which she did.

Boyfriend came back a few hours later and told her their relationship was over. She didn't realize that he had watched them walk hand in hand back from the pub and had watched her push him onto the sofa and climb on top of him to have sex with him from the window. He then called the police himself and explained the whole situation.
