To wonder who is drinking sugary drinks with their dinner

Govt advice is that families should have a jug of water on the table at dinner time. Do people really have sugary or even fizzy drinks with their meal?

I have water, DH has Pepsi Max and my son has Ribena. I don't care what people think about that

Whatever if you think I'm judging. I'm pretty overweight and listen to these snippets of government advice and would be pleased if there was some simple 'swap' to make me loose weight. When I heard this one I said to my OH that I don't believe people are even drinking sugary drinks with their meals & It's a made up idea. He said that I have no idea and live in a bubble. So I thought I would ask...

Our children only had water. (Whats a bad mother)

They could drink squash as a treat when we were out and fizzy for parties etc.
DD2 (20) still only drinks water. The other started drinking squash a year ago- she's 23. So make of that what you will.

We have squash with meals and in between too. I really don't care what others think as my kids are my kids. They're also a healthy weight and their teeth are fine.

Wine with dinner.

I'll have wine with lunch if out.

The DCs can have milk or water but usually don't have any.

My mum would [cats bum face] at anyone drinking juice at the dinner table.

No jug of water on our table. The kids like to make up a jug of buckfast with red bull - oh that's fizzy isnt it so it must be bad........

My kids on the weekends have a quarter of a cup of lemonade with tea!! Quick call social services now! I am
Clearly an unfit parent!! I really don't see the problem tbh they have water the rest of the time.

Intended or not your post sounds judgmental and rude!

For God's sake, what is it with all these 'what's it do with you?' defensive replies? By that logic, there'd be hardly any threads on here. It's silly and patronising.

Growing up, we used to have this crap but now I'm better educated and give all sugary drinks a wide berth. I can understand why families have it, especially in Britain...it's just not the done thing here to have a jug of water on the table at mealtimes, generally speaking.

That people have juice with their dinner strikes you as a 'made up idea'...really?
The Beatles have split up...had you heard?

MIssC - not when I've been there, but my kids are still young, maybe it changes? They do have squash if offered it after school at someones house and we're by no means perfect parents, just hadn't ever really associated squash/juice with meals!

I have coffee with breakfast, dd has milk. We have water with lunch. Dh and I have lemonade with dinner, dd has weak squash or sometimes her own small glass of melodyade like Mummy and Daddy.

She drinks water, milk or weak squash throughout the day. Sometimes she has chocolate milk, or a cup of weak tea or a hot chocolate with marshmallows.

She also eats chocolate and sweets along with her fruit, veg, proteins diet. There isn't a pick of fat on her.

She's doing fine without the govt or anyone else telling me what she should drink.

And carbs, forgot the carbs! She also eats those.

Everything in moderation, and moderation in everything. Including juice.

You don't believe people drink sugary drinks with meals? Seriously? Your OH is right you must live in a bubble. Dd1 drinks diluted fruit juice with meals as per the previous set of "government advice" and on doctors advice as orange juice helps iron absorption and she is prone to anaemia.

Actually I had wondered the same - really not in a judgy way; I don't care what anyone else puts down their neck! I just have genuinely never seen fizzy/juicy drinks served indoors, at the dinner table. I associate them with beaches and bars.

Then again I'm Northern and we served milky pissy tea with every single bloody meal. I hate tea.

To be fair, I don't often see anyone bringing the Pepsi out at the dinner table, but squash? Yeah. All the time.

DS likes a fruit shoot or an innocent smoothie. I have a fizzy drink or wine. DH has sparkling water with some sort of coridal. We're doomed.

On the plus side, DS is either at school or with a childminder during the week anyway and they both give him water so I'm only ruining him at weekends.

To be honest, it's not the drinks that are the problem in our house. It's the array of sugar and/or fatty snacks. If I wanted to lose weight I'd start there. But as we're all fairly active and none of us are overweight, I'll carry on as we are, thanks all the same.

I drink loads of water...we all do...but at dinner time it's squash. Robinsons orange or Ribena with the sugar in...the NAS stuff tastes like crap.

Report
ConfusedDotty · 27/06/2014 08:42

A bottle of Bud with every dinner. So I suppose that could be considered a fizzy drink.

GreenPetal94 · 27/06/2014 08:43

Whilst the gov are obviously telling us to think about sugar and calories in what we drink, that is only a small part of the picture. If you eat very healthily and drink squash then you are very healthy. If you eat high fat and high sugar processed food all day then drinking water will only make a small difference.
