To buy a soda for £5000

Is this mad? Is a sofa worth spending a lot of cash on? One we have is in bits. Got it reupholstered but it was done really badly. Gaping hole at side and layers of extra fabric at other side.
We can afford if without going into debt. Just wonder if it's worth spending so much money on a piece of furniture. Although this is one of the cheaper ones of all I've seen.

Same here, ours is pale and we've had to get a new cover for it, and will have to again soon.

that's expensive op. We have 2 leather sofas from dfs we bought 5 years ago abs they still look new. nowhere near that much, personally I'd shop around!

It is supremely comfortable and there is plenty of space.

We got our two leather recliner sofas in the January sale from a local furniture shop & paid £1500 for the pair (one 3 seater, one 2 seater).

If it's £2k then that's not so different - but I am always loathed to buy anything 'major' unless I feel like I'm getting a really good deal. Hence, sitting on threadbare sofas for 6 months waiting for the sale .

Not DFS, SCS & co type sales though - as a DFS Salesman once said to us "the sale must end on Sunday. So that the next one can start on Monday" .

get the sofa damn reupolstered at thefirst persons expense, workmen are covered by trades descriptions as much as shops.

Glad I read on. £2K for a sofa is fine! I probably wouldn't spend that on one with kids or dogs, mind!

We got ours (big 5 seater corner sofa) for about 2/3 that when M&S were having one of their 30% off weeks.

before we had kids (but when I was pregnant so knew one was moving in with us), we nearly bought a £10k sofa. In our minds, it was a sensible buy because the leather would be wipe clean. I thank my lucky stars on a daily basis we didn't buy that sofa. (it was the sort of leather that would scratch if you looked at it wrong, never mind being able to wipe sick off it)

previously had to other DFS sofa - total cost of £800 - had em for 4 years - they were lovely and still in brilliant condition - despite the best efforts of 3 cats and 3 kids!

£2000 is fine if it's the sofa you want - I couldn't afford it

We paid about £2k for our corner sofa and big snuggler chair. It's not out there expensive but there's definitely less expensive sofas/suites available.

I wouldn't want to get into debt for sofa when I could get a nice one for less. If i really needed a replacement and couldnt pay upfront, I would consider one of interest free credit options as long as there's no hidden charges in the small print -I've never had one.

Is it one from a big furniture chain you are looking at or a smaller shop?

I bought a leather three seater and an armchair on Ebay for £1500. They were new M&S ordered by an interior design company for some reason and the customer couldn't pay for the work.

It's defnitely worth looking on ebay....my friend bought a Conran corner sofa almost new for £800.

If the sofa you have now is decent quality then I'd be tempted to have it reupholstered properly.

Spending 5k on a sofa when you can afford it is fine if that's what you want to do but I'd be wanting a fairly decent life out if it, and would be having a think about how much I'd still like it, say in five year's time. A grand a year would be far too much for me to be spending but you might see that as good value for money.

But then I'm the kind of cheapskate/bloody skint person who bought an almost new Sofa Workshop three-seater on ebay for fifty quid. A thing of rare beauty it truly is. The people I bought it from had only had it about five minutes

The simple answer is whether you feel it is good value for money. If you do, then go for it.

Personally the thought horrifies me, but then i HATE spending money. The sort of budget I would think of for a sofa would be well under £200 second hand but as I say I am a meanie!
