to take a toddler with a fever to the park?

18 month old ds had his MMR last week and for the past 3 days he has had a high temperature but no other signs of illness, he seems to have his normal ( abundant) amount of energy. His temperature comes down with calpol or nurofen, it's 38.5 at the moment but doesn't seem to be bothering him at all.

If I thought he was ill or contagious I'd definitely not take him out, but it seems odd to only have a fever with no other signs of illness but I guess there is no guarantee that the fever is a reaction to the vaccination.

Wibu to take him to the park?

Nope. Take him and let him have a good toddle about. It'll take his mind off feeling hot. If he can't cope with it he'll soon let you know. Fresh air is great for them.

Speak to someone at your doctors practice if you're worried it's something more.

Hope he feels better soon.

DottyDooRidesAgain · 26/06/2014 08:13

No I would take him to the GP.
He has had a fever for the past 3 days. This is not normal.

Hope he feels better soon.

Fairylea · 26/06/2014 08:15

I agree with Dotty.

Mrsjayy · 26/06/2014 08:19

He should be fine but I would take him to the drs how long are they usually iffy for after vaccine I cant remember

londonrach · 26/06/2014 08:21

Yes take him to the park but I'd also book an appt with gp to get him checked.

MyFairyKing · 26/06/2014 08:25

YANBU to take him to the park but I agree with PPs, maybe speak to/take him to the GP to get him checked over.

Iggly · 26/06/2014 08:31

I wouldn't tbh because you've given medicine which is disgusting the symptoms. Better not to give it unless absolutely necessary otherwise they over do it.

Also pop to the gp. Three days with a fever post vaccine? Iffy!

Iggly · 26/06/2014 08:31

*disguising not disgusting!

Hakluyt · 26/06/2014 08:35

What's the GP going to do with a fever and no other symptoms?

I would take him to the park- but I would keep him away from other children just in case he's brewing something.

curiousuze · 26/06/2014 08:37

The GP will tell you to give him calpol and ibuprofen :)

ikeaismylocal · 26/06/2014 08:43

Thanks for the advice :)

I'll call the Dr and ask if it's normal, I read on the NHS website that feeling ill/fever is normal for 2/3 days 6-11days after the MMR vaccination, he doesn't seem to be ill but he doesn't want to play or read books with me,he just wants to jump off the sofa whilst watching Mr tumble, I think that's due to unused energy rather than anything else.

ikeaismylocal · 26/06/2014 08:45

He hasn't had any medicine since last night, I don't think I need to give it to him when he's awake and seemingly ok in himself.

Hakluyt · 26/06/2014 08:49

Calpol and ibuprofen for a mild fever with no pain or other symptoms? Really? I wouldn't.

KnackeredMuchly · 26/06/2014 08:58

My little lad is going through the sane thing! I'd take him to the park.

Kikaninchen · 26/06/2014 09:04

I don't take my childrens' temperatures unless they seem really ill, so if I was ever in your situation I wouldn't even know I was.

I only give medication if they seem ill or in pain too, if they seem hot I just get them to change their clothes for something cooler.

I would definitely go to the park.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 26/06/2014 09:31

Take him to the park. It's not a drastically high temp and to be honest the recommendation now is to leave a temperature alone to do it's job and fight off the infection. He's post vaccination and has no other symptoms. I'd go out.

5madthings · 26/06/2014 09:38

I would take him to the park.

If my child was otherwise well but a bit warm I wouldn't know what their temperature was.

I also wouldn't give Calpol unless they seemed like they needed it ie feeling unwell and clearly poorly. A bit of a temp is the bodies way if fighting infection and in this case is probably due to the mmr.

I would make sure they kept fluid levels up and keep an eye out for any other symptoms but a temp in an otherwise well child is not a reason to stay in.

arethereanyleftatall · 26/06/2014 10:34

If we didn't gave thermometers you wouldn't even know he was ill.
Take him to the park.
I always go by how my children are acting, rather than their symptoms.
If he's completely find in himself, I wouldn't waste a doctors time. Though the phone call to check is probably a good idea.

ikeaismylocal · 26/06/2014 11:38

He's spent the morning running about in just his nappy and now he's feeling a bit cooler, we are going to go to the park this afternoon when he wakes up from his nap unless he seems ill.

I gave him some nurofen last night as he was also suffering with his teeth, infact maybe teething is adding to his temperature.

Thanks for the advice! I'm clueless when it comes to decisions about health.

DS1 had a temp after his mmr but nothing else, was fine in himself, we took him out as we were on holiday, he was fine :)

Thurlow · 26/06/2014 11:48

DD always seemed to run a slight temperature when she was teething, though I know they say kids shouldn't. I agree with others - worth keeping an eye on and maybe talking to the doc later today or tomorrow, but if he's fine in himself just keep him cool and let him have a run around.
