they should just say it looks really old and crappy.

There is a difference between trendy stuff that's been labelled 'shabby chic' or 'vintage' which is actually a load of old tat and proper 'vintage'.

I'm glad it's going out of fashion actually, as well as all this 'country chic' crap too.
Being farmers and living (predictably) on a farm, and being not particularly fashion conscious people, some of our trendy city friends thought it was hilarious that for a couple of years we were the most fashionable people they knew!! Even the teenage nieces and nephews weren't totally embarrassed to be seen with us.

Cocolepew · 26/06/2014 14:41

I painted all my pine white and stung it with fairy lights

squoosh · 26/06/2014 14:41

And I really hate when people strip back doors and window frames to reveal the 'lovely' pine. Stop revealing the pine, pine is shit.

HaroldLloyd · 26/06/2014 14:42

I like bunting.

I am going to continue to bunt without a care in the world.

beccajoh · 26/06/2014 14:43

I loathe shabby chic, and Cath Kidston makes me feel murderous.

squoosh · 26/06/2014 14:46

Cath Kidston herself hates shabby chic. This is her own very unshabby kitchen.

Ah bollocks to you - this horrible orange pine chest of drawers is about to get fucked in the ass by Annie Sloan Grin

Wot, no cabbage roses?! Shock

hellskitty · 26/06/2014 15:03

Don't like that kitchen

Cereal0ffender · 26/06/2014 15:05

Granny chic makes my skin crawl

Vintagejazz · 26/06/2014 15:50

I will happily Sloan any of that horrible knotted pine stuff that was so popular about 15 years ago. It looked shite then and it looks shite now.

Seriously, any style looks a bit naff and stage settish if it's done too meticulously. I like a bit of floral and colour, but not all over the place.
Likewise, I like a bit of cool neutral but I hate a kitchen that looks like an operating theatre.

Vintagejazz · 26/06/2014 15:53

Me neither hellskitty

squoosh · 26/06/2014 15:54

The kitchen is a bit too clinical for my taste but I love that it's SO far from the aesthetic that made her her millions.

KoalaDownUnder · 26/06/2014 15:59

Grin at LaurieFairyCake

I've come to fucking hate the word 'vintage'. Overused to the point of meaningless.

Burren · 26/06/2014 16:07

I think it can be nicely done, but I hate those cheapie efforts with a bad paint job that have then been Brillo-padded to distress them at symmetrical intervals. They remind me of stonewashed jeans.

But then any house with an all over 'styled' look looks stagey and awful to me, whether it's Minimalist Chrome, Bunting Surprise, Distressed Industrial or Large Letters Saying Gnomic Things on the wall.

Summerbreezing · 26/06/2014 16:16

I agree Burren. I really don't like houses that look too carefully designed and where the owner has obviously made a conscious decision to go with some theme or other. That looks fine in magazines but in real life it just looks contrived.

hiddenhome · 26/06/2014 16:16

Dya like my new farmhouse chic egg box?

With you on the crappily painted furniture (why not learn to do it properly) but you will never take my bunting away from me

KirjavaTheCat · 26/06/2014 17:16

Bunting will never have had its day Angry

I cannot stand pine, fuck it good Laurie.

If I look at self catering or b and b I instantly dismiss if I see cheap pine furniture.

A lick of paint, any paint will transform pine, there is simply no excuse for pine any more.

BTW www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/151336350561?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0

autentico chalk paint looks far better than annie and has much better range of colours.

agree, the whole shebang, houses should evolve..

LaurieFairyCake · 26/06/2014 19:57

Half way through - got a bit more painting to do between the drawers and have glass rose handles to put on. Then put soft wax on and loads of varnish on the papered bits

Fideliney · 26/06/2014 20:04

You did all that since 3 Laurie?! Or is this Blue Peter jiggery pokery?

Anyway, it is rather lovely, I want it Smile

okeydonkey · 26/06/2014 20:06

Yanbu I HATE the term Shabby Chic!! Drives me insane.
