English isnt my first language and sometimes my grammar isn't perfect, but everyone understands what I'm saying.

But still so many people on here send nasty messages calling me stupid, a pleb and increadably dim.

Why do people feel the need to throw personal insults just for minor grammar errors?

OP posts:
MorrisZapp · 24/06/2014 20:21

They don't, usually. Could you give examples?

Pumpkinpositive · 24/06/2014 20:25

When you say sending you messages, do you mean private messages or within a thread?

RiverTam · 24/06/2014 20:25

thread about a thread??

PedlarsSpanner · 24/06/2014 20:32

Okay I have looked at your prev thread wrt two degrees/boring office job

out of 220 or so posts SIX were critical of the grammar you used. Six. You had heaps of advice

so, YABU sorry

Pumpkinpositive · 24/06/2014 20:36

Septal, were you the OP on that thread?? Grin Grin

I read the thread but don't think I commented. Believe me, your grammar was the least remarkable thing about your contributions on that thread. Grin

Pumpkinpositive · 24/06/2014 20:36

Spegal, not Septal! Deemed autocorrect.

Patrickstarisabadbellend · 24/06/2014 20:41

My grammar and spelling are horrendous at times but it doesn't really bother me.

People who comment on my spelling and grammar are complete arseholes though. I find people like them to be sad acts with nothing better to do.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 24/06/2014 20:43

I'm Welsh and I feel quite welcome here! Smile

OneLittleToddleTerror · 24/06/2014 20:47

Spegal I don't think the issue is being English or not. I'm very open on mumsnet about being Chinese and from New Zealand. I don't always write or speak correct English either. (Though I can barely write Chinese but that's another issue). I have never been called names or a recipient of nasty messages on MN. I found it very tolerant here.

I have seen your thread on office work. I didn't post but I don't agree with your opinion there. A lot of people don't like their work. It pays the bill.

antimatter · 24/06/2014 20:49

if you got unpleasant PM's inform MN about it

OneLittleToddleTerror · 24/06/2014 20:50

Besides there are lots of native speaker of English who aren't English. DH is in the confusing category of British born foreigner. (His parents are Brummies, born in wales but left at 4 to NZ). Everyone calls him a foreigner as he sounds like one. I always wonder if the BNP count him as a foreigner who came here to steal jobs Grin

SuperFlyHigh · 24/06/2014 21:07

People were asking you if you were German due to your degrees and also a few obvious mistakes.

I personally understood you and feel it was your attitude and responses that got you the rude, uncalled for comments.

But go ahead and feel like we don't like you because you're not English if that pleases you.

BecauseIsaidS0 · 24/06/2014 21:18

Oh FFS. I was on that thread, trying to help you (and then you said you didn't want career advice - seems you just wanted to bitch about offices) and I'm not English.

ppplease · 24/06/2014 21:22

6 is dreadful Pedlars.
There should not be any.

I have said it before and I will say it again. I think it is potentially racist to call out someone's grammar or spelling.

ppplease · 24/06/2014 21:26

Send reports Spegal, every time you have a problem. It is the only way to stop it.
Mumsnet always say that they love reports.

Perhaps it is time for grammar policying to be in the Talk Guidelines as something not allowed.

Ludways · 24/06/2014 21:33

Bloody hell Wally, I didn't realise you were Welsh, of all things, be gone with you!!!!

OffLikeADirtyShirt · 24/06/2014 21:35

I commented on her written use of the English language, and English is not my first language. Racist? That is so ridiculous - it's quite sad that such a serious word is being so misused.

Objection · 24/06/2014 21:39

If you're referring to your other thread; those personal I suits had nothing to do with your spelling and grammar - they had to do with your atrocious attitude.

Objection · 24/06/2014 21:40

Commenting on someone's grammar is racist???
Er...no! Only if you make a prejudiced judgement relating to race when commenting on the grammar.

Hoppinggreen · 24/06/2014 21:45

Non English people are welcome as far as I can see.
Just because people didn't like your attitude it doesn't mean it's because of your nationality.

Chippednailvarnish · 24/06/2014 21:54

But still so many people on here send nasty messages calling me stupid, a pleb and increadably dim

I don't think it's anything to do with your nationality.

riverboat1 · 24/06/2014 22:24

I think OP means 'native speaker ofthe English language' when she says 'English'.

ilovesooty · 24/06/2014 22:33

But still so many people on here send nasty messages calling me stupid, a pleb and increadably dim

I've read all that thread and can't see any post which said that.

SuperFlyHigh · 25/06/2014 08:33

To be fair ilovesooty I think OP means private messages where name calling occurred which Is totally out of order and I wouldn't condone that in any way.

Igneococcus · 25/06/2014 08:54

How long have you been in GB spegal?

I just had quick scan of that other thread, as a fellow German (who finished her last degree at the ripe old age of 32) I can tell you that the sort of comments you made in your last post there about schools in Cambodia and so on will have people rolling their eyes no matter what your ethnic or langauge background is, to be fair though, a lot of Germans would be rolling their eyes too.
It's just a bit angeberisch, others only interested in their little lives, their food and holidays and here is I with my concerns for schoolchildren in Cambodia. Nothing to do with language/nationality if people get a bit put out about that.
