To think that if my DD didn't ignore the 'no phone' rule at school then I quite often wouldn't know where she was or what time she'd be due home?

She text just gone 3 to say there was a rounders match at another school and she would be back about 6pm. She hadn't been told this before today and there is nothing on the website. It happens a lot. I believe her when she says she hadn't previously been told as she's a very organised sort of child. She's year 8.

As a teacher, I find it unbelievable that it wasn't pre arranged.

Writerwannabe83 · 24/06/2014 17:48

It happens quite a lot.....

I'd be checking with the teachers to make sure your DD is telling the truth and not just sneaking off with her mates Smile

WaffleWiffle · 24/06/2014 17:50

Goodness... I wonder how on Earth children coped before mobile phones existed!Shock Hmm

EverythingIsAwesome · 24/06/2014 17:50

My DDs school would phone me, if this mistake had happened ...

WorraLiberty · 24/06/2014 17:51

Well the school would have phoned you to let you know, wouldn't they?

My DC are allowed to take their phones to school but they have to remove the battery, so they can't sneakily use them in class.

MyballsareSandy · 24/06/2014 17:51

It does sound odd I agree. But in the two years she has been there this must have happened at least 15 times. She is sport mad and really looks forward to the matches that she knows in advance, going on about them, so I'm usually aware well if they have bee told Grin.

Her friends' parents also moan about it.

All DS away fixtures require a signed permission slip so I think I would be checking it out too especially if it happens a lot!

DrankSangriaInThePark · 24/06/2014 17:52

I think the scales might fall from your eyes with a judicious call to the school.

Being very organised just means she can pull the wool with aplomb.

And what waffle said.

I stand by my first belief - your DD and her friends are telling porkies and are up to no good Grin

googoodolly · 24/06/2014 17:53

No way would this not be pre-arranged.

I'd suspect that she's probably off out with her mates somewhere.

MyballsareSandy · 24/06/2014 17:53

A friends mum is picking them up so it is true, she hasn't gone off with her mates. Would the school really ring all those parents?

OP posts:
MyballsareSandy · 24/06/2014 17:54

I don't have a problem with her going out with friends, she has lots of freedom Grin, no need to lie.

Buttercup27 · 24/06/2014 17:55

This sounds really odd. Are you sure she's attending sports events? These take a while to arrange so you would always know in advance. They maybe cancelled at short notice 8 never arranged at short notice.

googoodolly · 24/06/2014 17:55

Her friends parents moan too? Would that be because their DD's are also lying about it?

Sorry, but no way would she be allowed to randomly go to an away match last-minute without the school asking for your permission first.

Ladygaggia · 24/06/2014 17:56

My daughter is in year 7 and her school recommends that they have a mobile Hmm we are against it but I feel like we are swimming against the tide.
Today rounders was called off at the last minute due to weather and she would have been sat at school until 5pm if her friend hadn't texted me.
We get no alerts from the school itself.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 24/06/2014 17:56

YANBU.

My brother's school has a rule of no phones. My brother had to get his young carers worker to go into school and tell them that there was no way my brother would be leaving his phone at home, because they were refusing to accept that he needed his phone. He's a young carer for both of my parents, and since I've moved away, he's had to take on a lot of the responsibility. The chances of either of my parents feeling able to call on the school phone if they needed him is nil, and my mum has severe OCD so knowing my brother couldn't contact her if he needed to would send her over the edge.

They do random bag checks to make sure people aren't even bringing their phones when they travel to school on the bus or train (like my brother). It's ridiculous!

BigfootFiles · 24/06/2014 17:56

If it is true then perhaps raise it with the school governors as a safeguarding issue.

Orangeanddemons · 24/06/2014 17:56

I don't do sports fixtures, but know as a teacher, that under Safeguarding, all kids must be accounted for at all times. If ours stay late for any reason, they must have parental permission.

googoodolly · 24/06/2014 17:57

Are you sure she doesn't have after school detention or anything like that? That way her mate's mum could collect her from school and it won't look suspicious to you lot as parents.

Ladygaggia · 24/06/2014 17:57

Also we don't give match by match authorisation - it's down to the kids to tell us what is/isn't going on!

Tabby1963 · 24/06/2014 17:57

Hmmm, I second what other posters have said; OP she's pulling the wool!

At our school phone calls are made to all parents and carers if something happens and a school activity arrangement is changed at short notice. We cannot allow children to take part (and be late home) unless we have cleared it with someone at home. Additionally, we will have received written confirmation (tear off slip at bottom of permission letter) that child can actually attend event in the first place.

Ladygaggia · 24/06/2014 17:59

Clearly not all schools operate the same.
I don't think she's lying at all.
Sounds same as our high school except they promote the phone ownership

MyballsareSandy · 24/06/2014 17:59

I've never had to sign a permission slip for away sports fixtures at secondary unless overnight.

seriously they aren't all lying. I can email the PE teacher and find out easily.

I think a no phone rule in school is unreasonable.

Phones switched off in lessons is not remotely unreasonable.
