A partner of a friend is still riding regularly at 39 weeks pregnant. AIBU to think that is completely bonkers?

depends on the horse and what she is doing really - is she hacking gently round the lanes or competing at Badminton?
I rather suspect the former
fairly bonkers regardless

JerseySpud · 23/06/2014 14:28

YABU. Its her horse, she knows it better than you do.

gordyslovesheep · 23/06/2014 14:28

if she can why not? I would have struggled at that stage but it's her choice

Vinomcstephens · 23/06/2014 14:30

Totally bonkers. She can have the most docile nag known to man, she can be telepathically linked to it in some "I really love my horse, me" kind of way but it's a completely unnecessary risk in my opinion.

But...horses for courses and all that (bad pun totally intended!)

squatcher · 23/06/2014 14:34

Plenty of experienced riders continue to ride until full-term. If it's something she does every day when not pregnant (so part of her normal life) and it's her own horse, who she knows very well, and she is happy and confident, then why would she stop?

My good friend (three horses of her own to exercise daily and an experienced jockey) did make the concession to her husband to stop jumping at around 6 months.

I personally wouldn't choose to, but then I found sitting on a sofa uncomfortable by that stage, let alone a horse...

softlysoftly · 23/06/2014 14:38

Yes bonkers. Your balance is affected and even the most placid horse can be unpredictable.

I am a rider btw.

CuppaSarah · 23/06/2014 14:38

I'm shocked she's not already had the baby if she's regularly riding! Surely all that jostling about would kick off labour. YANBU it is pretty bonkers, but in a good way.

Ah so mixed I'm not a rider (in fact can't stand horses) so really didn't get it and seemed a huge and unnecessary risk to me. Her own horse just round the lanes but still.......

Mary King was still riding competitively at 5 months pregnant, wasn't she?

Personally I wouldn't, and didn't, but DD was a 3rd time lucky IVF attempt and I am not a hugely competent rider so would have spent the whole time nervous as hell, transmitting that fear to the horse and making it MORE likely for me to have an accident.

However if you're an experienced rider and happy to take that risk then I don't see why not. It's brilliant exercise.

CoffeeTea103 · 23/06/2014 14:48

Yanbu, unnecessary risk.

Flexibilityiskey · 23/06/2014 14:53

YABU. If it is a sensible horse that she knows well and she feels comfortable still riding I don't see a problem. I chose to stop at 5 months when I was pregnant but I know a lot of people don't.

usualnamechanger · 23/06/2014 14:59

I wouldn't. My aunt was very experienced, rode horses since she was a child, etc. and that' how she lost her baby (it was a boy). She couldn't get pregnant again after that Sad
