To think spaghetti bolognese is better without meat?

DH is vegetarian since the horse meat thing. I'm not but it's hard to cook separate meals all the time so today made vegetarian bolognese and it's FAR nicer than my usual.

I used red lentils instead of meat...onions finely chopped, garlic, fresh and dried basil, rosemary tomato, passata and some finely diced carrot and celery as well as a teeny spoon of marmite.

It's SO nice and obviously cheaper too!

Susy ooh lentil bake with cheese! I'm having a go at that!

bun oh do! Yes...and it's thick...due to the lentils I suppose. I can;t abide vegetarian food that's all thin and tasteless.

Im going to make it too this week. Im going to tell a colleague about it also as she loves all things lentil! Iv never heard her talking about a "lentilbole"

I often have lentil bolognaise and I much prefer it to meat bolognaise. Well, I am vegetarian.
For those who are low(ish) carbing, it goes well on a bed of shredded steamed cabbage , with a bit of grated cheese on the top.

Recipes and variations sound wonderful (perhaps not red lentils, lovely as they are in vegetable soups etc.) But if you use spaghetti you have to eat the spaghetti first and then the sauce. I think cheese clings to spaghetti, but meat doesn't.

Quorn mince here. Lentils and pasta together sound a bit starchy/stodgy to me.

MrsWinnibago · 22/06/2014 23:34

Do you think Quorn is good for you though Toys? I've read so many negative things about it

It's just fungus/mushroom. I don't see a problem.

MrsWinnibago · 22/06/2014 23:51

Hmm. I dunno...there's no smoke without fire and it's heavily processed too...which is never good.

Processed doesn't equal bad to me. And there's lots of smoke about lots of stuff without any fires anywhere near, but agree that quorn probably isn't everybody's cup of tea (or bowl of bolognese).
