Cutlery in the dishwasher

I know it's a stupid thing to have a disagreement about but help me to clarify which of us - DH or myself, is the one being unreasonable!

When I load the dishwasher I put cutlery in 'prongs/blade down' in the rack, so that the handles poke up to make it easy to put away at the end.
DH puts them handles down as he reckons they get cleaner that way.

Seriously, we've had words more than once about this!
Who's right Mumsnet jury? Over to you...

Handles down and all mixed in the baskets.

I don't have many knives in though, I always hand wash sharp knives and my normal and fish knives are bone handled so don't go in.

I'm with your DH on this, definitely! I always put them handles down. Makes sure they're properly clean then!

We've had the same row... more then once Blush I always say handles up. Many years ago a friend of mine slipped over whilst unstacking the dishwasher and had a nasty, but thankfully not life threatening, laceration from landing on a sharp knife.

Montybojangles · 23/06/2014 09:54

You could always change your dishwasher to one like mine op. It has a shelf at the top that you put the cutlery in, eliminating the debate forever.

But if not then your DH is correct. Handles down and sharp knives flat in the top rack.

Handles up, pointy bits down because if the dishwasher gets left open and someone trips over it they could easily kill themselves falling onto unturned knives!

silverhyina · 23/06/2014 13:19

As someone who worked as a dishwasher in a restaurant i put handels down except for teaspoons it makes things cleaner

Melonbreath · 23/06/2014 13:33

Handles up, they are easier to get out.
However, dh puts the cutlery tub thing in the back of the
Dishwasher. It drives me mad. I like it at the front, when I go to make a cup of tea (all the time) I have to lean over dirty plates to put the teaspoon in.

Sharp knives with handles up, others all handle down. Its the way I've always done it, no reason why they couldn't all go handle up.

I did have someone pull me up as I put all knives in one slot, all spoons in another, he couldn't understand why someone me would be so particular. Then he saw me put them away Grin He wasn't a very bright man.

I have a whisk that is an absolute pain if you dont put it handle up so the water can drain out. If you forget then you get sprayed with wtaer whrn you next use it
