its the most beautiful early evening and dh and I are sat in garden reading the paper when boom boom very loud reggae is bursting out from 2 doors up. Am I a spoilsport to not want this as my kids think, it has sent me indoors as cant stand the noise.

It's a bit annoying, but there's not much you can do. Even in the countryside, where I live, peace and quiet can be broken by heavy machinery, planes, traffic - and of course, delightful smells when they've been muckspreading!

Scarletohello · 21/06/2014 18:43

Live and let live I say. Is the fact it's reggae a factor? And if so, why?

Molotov · 21/06/2014 18:48

Well, if you dont like reggae, it's a big fucking factor! Would you like Pantera (loud, aggressive metal band) blasting out of you didn't like it? Or drum n' bass, or trance, if it wasn't your cup of tea?

Music shouldn't be played too loud, especially with windows open on sunmer days such as this. I thought that was common courtesy?

jollygoose · 21/06/2014 18:48

no its not that its reggae I would feel the same whatever was playing its the sheer volume of it all you can here is the boom and I just cannot understand why anyone would think it ok to make the whole neighbourhood listen to their noise. God help anyone with young dc trying to sleep.

Totally agree Jolly. I have been known to ask people to turn it down.

mamalovesmojitos · 21/06/2014 18:55

YANBU. not sure there's anything you can do though. Oh, to own my own private island a la Richard Branson Envy

TalisaMaegyr · 21/06/2014 19:51

Nothing you can do at 6:30pm I'm afraid! There's always noise of some sort, it's just one of those things. It's selfish though.

littledrummergirl · 21/06/2014 20:01

We had that with ndn when my dc were under 5, only it was m&m and similar.

I feel your pain.

CrispyFB · 21/06/2014 20:11

There's something about music playing that I find far more intrusive than other sounds at the same or louder decibels e.g. lawnmowers, children etc. I find it a lot harder to (sorry for the pun!) tune it out, my mind can't help but "follow" it whether I want to or not if that makes sense - yet I'll not really notice other sounds.

Other people like DH have no problem ignoring it at all and it doesn't bother him in nearly the same way - he's able to easily ignore it. I'm guessing a lot of people who don't mind it are more like my DH. It's quite possible a large proportion of the people who do it don't really mind it when others do it either so they don't realise the impact it can have on those who are incapable of blotting it out.

specialsubject · 21/06/2014 20:28

it is antisocial to have loud music blaring unless you live out of earshot of other people. There are things called headphones.

but there are lot of selfish people about, I'm afraid. I hate having a peaceful evening disturbed - but was lucky enough to buy a house where it isn't an issue!

itsnothingoriginal · 21/06/2014 20:31

I'm outside and enjoying birdsong and quiet for the first summer in 6 years after the neighbours from hell who lived behind us finally sold up and moved away! I feel your pain OP. I wouldn't inflict my choice of music on anyone else - it's just totally unreasonable..
