Moved into first house a little over a year ago. House had been empty for about a year prior to us buying it, so obviously water had been turned off until we switched it back on.

Upstairs bathroom suite is grey. The toilet was disgusting, soon as you lifted the encrusted lid you could have cried at the smell, god knows how we didn't notice it when we viewed but who looks down the loo then!

So, since then I have tried many, many different method to clean it but there's some on the bottom of the bowl which I just can't shift no matter how I go at it. It's very annoying and looks gross obviously.

Still grrr that the seller's didn't think to clean the loos before the put it on the market!

So AIBU to give up on it?!?!?! Angry

can you fill it with bleach, close the lid and leave it for a week?

butterfliesinmytummy · 21/06/2014 15:26

Couple of liters of full fat coke in the bowl, leave it for a few days before flushing. Might have to do it a couple of times but it should work.....

LaurieFairyCake · 21/06/2014 15:27

You empty the water out with a bendable plastic cup

Pour a whole domestos limescale bottle down

And then come back 8 hours later and do a very small amount of scrubbing

Manda472 · 21/06/2014 15:28

What about the false teeth tablet things......aren't they meant to be good for cleaning really bad toilets??

iamdivergent · 21/06/2014 15:28

Couldn't leave for a week, don't want the children wandering downstairs in the night for the loo.

I might try the coke thing next, have never heard of that one. Thanks Smile

Yes, denture tablets left overnight are good at lifting limescale

thismumismad · 21/06/2014 15:30

Oxy powder works well too dissolve a couple of scoops in boiling water and poor in

thismumismad · 21/06/2014 15:31

Pour not poor sorry. [Blush]

SaucyJack · 21/06/2014 15:32

Spirits of salts (hydrochloric acid) works well apparently not that I've ever bothered to do it

gamerchick · 21/06/2014 15:32

You need to scoop as much as the water out as possible and then treat with remover. Or crush some denture stuff and make a paste to cover it and leave overnight. It does come off eventually if you keep at it.

Denture tablets are good to just plop a couple in overnight and scrub in the morning though.

ouryve · 21/06/2014 15:33

If you're not in possession of the dreaded loo brush, btw, it might be worth investing in a cheap one just to get it clean.

mysteryfairy · 21/06/2014 15:36

Are you going away this summer? Maybe attempt the coke treatment then and leave till you get back

Limescale needs to be scrubbed off. Lakeland sell a special implement for the purpose. It does work.

thecuntureshow · 21/06/2014 15:40

I'd just buy a new one!

CaptainTripps · 21/06/2014 15:41

New one? Cheapest model.

ouryve · 21/06/2014 15:43

Old toothbrushes also work well for scrubbing nooks and crannies.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 21/06/2014 15:55

I hope to God that you've removed that ENCRUSTED loo seat while wearing a hazmat suit and burned it.

The smell was probably vile because the water was turned off and what was left in the bowl evaporated, so the U-bend was redundant.

There's nothing more effective than donning your Marigolds, baling all the water out and giving the whole thing a good scrub with abrasive cream-cleaner. If it's just lime-scale discolouring it, bale out the water, pour a bottle of vinegar down there and leave it overnight.

Perissa · 21/06/2014 16:01

Might be a stupid question, why should you not put boiling water down a toilet?

Monica101 · 21/06/2014 16:04

You have to take all the water out of the toilet bowl for any of the bleach / lime scale remover treatments to work.

Scoop as much out then use a sponge to get the rest out. Use a limescale remover or coke overnight. That may work.
