about replacing my carpets?

have been struggling a bit to keep on top of housework recently, and mentioned to a friend I was thinking of getting a cleaner.

She was a bit Hmm about it and said 'I doubt you will find anyone who will be prepared to hoover like that, you'd be better off getting new carpets'

Carpets (8 rooms plus stairs/landing worth) were bought a considerable expense by ExH before he left a few years ago. You can't hoover them with the brush part of the hoover as that doesnt get them clean, only the nozzle (sp) and even then it doesn't get the fluff off completely (If I have time I go round picking it off by hand).

I assumed a cleaner might do a better job than me, not that I'd have to spend £1000s ripping out carpet! AIBU, or was friend having a dig (she has a cleaner herself, so I dont think its envy on her part!)

If you have a Henry then you need the turbo head. It's the dogs whatsits. I run a cleaning company and I have yet to find a carpet I can't clean with the rotating/turbo head

And if it gets to the point where you really can't stand the carpet any longer, consider just replacing it in the downstairs living areas, where it needs the most cleaning.

Phone john Lewis up and ask what's the best hoover for a low pike carpet.

Or lower your standards

Several upright vacs now have a system where you can switch the rotating brush on or off for different floor types. I have a Panasonic light eco max and a Dyson Animal, both do that. Could you borrow different models from friends to try?

I'd ask the carpet manufacturer what they recommend.

Runes thats what the henry turbo head does. I also like the vax lightweight upright with the optional brush.

I second a Sebo - one my second one now, brilliant. Also a Miele, especially one with the 'cat and dog' attachment, but Sebo would be my first choice. Having to vacuum by just the nozzle is rediculous - your current vacuum cleaner obviously can't hack it.
