About a companys facebook page comment

I may be about to order from a company and thought I would look at their facebook page first. It seems good although there is a worrying negative comment I might try to follow up on but one comment posted by the company has given me pause for thought.

It is a picture of one of the items they have worked on .Its for an Irish person and the comment is
I was going to engrave on the back of this Plaque "This Plaque was Engraved in England by an ex-Serviceman" but I thought it may not be such a wise move

I dont know, but it unsettled me to see it. Im not sure I want to give this person my business but cant seem to articulate even to myself why . I am Irish myself so maybe Im being sensitive . But why even put the comment? Surely its just another job the company was given and no remarks are required?

yanbu the comment is not called for at all

Runesigil · 21/06/2014 13:43

Some Irish people don't like English people much, and English Forces personnel even less. I'd guess the commenter had experienced a negative reaction.

If it concerns you, either ask what was meant as opposed to what I've inferred as I could be completely wrong, or buy elsewhere.

Birdsgottafly · 21/06/2014 13:46

It seems odd, unless it was a company that employed ex servicemen ( so went from a Charity to business which has happened).

Or, if it was a commemorative item around D Day etc.

I can understand the sentiment, I have both English and Northern Irish family members who have been massively affected by the "troubles" and there will always be a sense of bitterness.

As I'm sure there will be around other conflict situations.

On the face of it, the comment is very unnecessary.

Or, Is it the norm for them to put "carved by an ex serviceman", on the back of items?

Nanny0gg · 21/06/2014 13:48

Putting the statement on the FB page was pointless as any customer could see it, so they might as well have been antagonistic and actually put it on the item.

If you're not going to buy, I would message them and tell them why.

NollaigShona · 21/06/2014 13:51

The intention may have been to deliberately provoke. If so then it is offensive. I can't really see the point of putting the comment on Facebook at all.
FWIW I am Irish, love the English and have the greatest respect for all who have served in the military.

KillmeNow · 21/06/2014 17:51

I do feel it is deliberately provocative .It also identifies the person who the engraving is for which is a bit off to say the least.

I might contact him - he is so well identified I can find him on facebook and twitter -to see what he thinks . I think if it were my item ,commissioned and paid for ,I would be very unhappy that it has this comment attached to it for all to see.

im irish and im not offended by that. ive a weird sense of humour though so i found it funny. if i had ordered something from him and he has said that to me i would have laughed.

KillmeNow · 21/06/2014 21:13

Really mommy2ash? You find it funny?
I cant see that Im afraid. And as I said in the OP I am also Irish .

Im not offended per se though.Just annoyed I think that he can put that on a public site with the assumption that everyone who sees it will agree with him.Even the person whose item it is. Maybe he does find it funny.

Ive not contacted him yet as Im a bit scared to in a way. I mean if someone contacted you via twitter or facebook about another site would you be intrigued or alarmed?

Dilemma.

FYI, I found the company FB just by googling that sentance.

KellyHopter · 21/06/2014 21:35

Yes, seems pointlessly antagonistic, especially as he's referring to a paying customer.

The only thing which would make it less weird would be if the item is some sort of anti Britain/armed forces thing as that would at least give some context to the comment, and I'd think it less provocative then, more tongue-in-cheek.

Catypillar · 21/06/2014 21:43

I googled it- it's a plaque for a member of Sinn Fein. Makes more sense now. Still a stupid thing to put of Facebook though.

SunnySon · 22/06/2014 02:36

I'm Irish and felt mildly offended after reading your OP until I googled it. It does change the context and make it more humorous. It's a plaque for a Sinn Fein mla, the engraver is just pointing out the percieved irony. I can't speak for anyone else but I'd imagine the Sinn Fein member would find the comment amusing too, but wouldn't appreciate it being engraved on the plaque, hence the fb post. Yabu, I don't think you need to contact the member, I'd imagine he's already seen the post.
