to think that the NUT strike WILL cause quite a lot of disruption actually!

The NUT leader said that next month's strike date had been chosen to "cause minimum disruption to examinations" - and that "we deeply regret the disruption it causes parents and pupils".
What about other end of term events like Summer fairs and year 6 performances? They don't matter do they because they don't count towards government statistics!!

I suppose there wouldn't be any point in striking if there was no disruption at all though. Hence why they never strike in school holidays.

CrohnicallyExhausted · 20/06/2014 19:58

And if you quoted them right, they don't deny that it will cause a lot of disruption- just minimum disruption to exams (and they deeply regret the disruption it causes).

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 20/06/2014 20:00

Anyone else read the title and think the NUT strike was something to do with actual nuts?

Confused

I'm such a numpty!

Hmm

These strikes are pointless. Parents say, "Oh, another strike?" and then mosey on with what they were doing.

No one cares. They should put the energy into something else.

Or strike for weeks like the petrol strike and cause proper disruption and I can have a lie in. Just one day is silly - like they're too scared to actually strike and are testing the water with a toe.

Teacher strike? Meh!

cardibach · 20/06/2014 20:01

Yes, it's exams they are avoiding, you know, so as not to disadvantage DCs who need results in them to go to college/sixth form/University. Nothing to do with Government statistics. Believe me, if they could disrupt those without harming actual pupils they would!

Luggagecarousel · 20/06/2014 20:05

The strike won't cause anywhere near as much disruption to education as Gove plans to cause.

DeepThought · 20/06/2014 20:07

yy minimise disruption to exams

Summer fairs are normally afterschool round these parts and run by PTAs

Years 6 performances, yes can imagine some DM sadfaces

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 20/06/2014 20:08

Yes I only clicked on it because I thought it was about nuts Blush

rollonthesummer · 20/06/2014 20:09

The NUT leader said that next month's strike date had been chosen to "cause minimum disruption to examinations"

But they're doing exactly what they say they're doing. I doubt they are causing any disruption to exams!

rollonthesummer · 20/06/2014 20:09

The strike won't cause anywhere near as much disruption to education as Gove plans to cause.

WSS

I wish sine people would look at the bigger picture.

MaryWestmacott · 20/06/2014 20:09

The whole point of a public sector strike is to cause disruption to voters who'll hopefully put pressure on MPs to "fix it" and then they'll get what they want. Private sector strikes work by costing employers money, public sector by causing other people hassle.

They have avoided exams, so will cause hassle, not damage children's futures, but beyond that, if it was just "business as usual" they'd be no point in doing it.

FannyFifer · 20/06/2014 20:10

Good job we are on hols in Scotland before then, no disruption here. [helpful]

TheEnchantedForest · 20/06/2014 20:12

I never understand why parents aren't standing side by side with teachers over strikes. Teachers are fighting for education in this country.
I want my child to be taught by a well qualified, well paid, motivated teacher.

By completely decimating teachers' pay and conditions over the last few years, Gove has made teaching such an unattractive prospect to good graduates now that far fewer will choose it as a profession, Then who will the children be left with?

I just don't understand how parents can be 'meh' about it.

WaitMonkey · 20/06/2014 20:12

King, that genuinely made me laugh out loud. Grin
What area is striking ? Is it another national strike ?

Shhh, our yr 6 teacher is still taking them on the planned outwards bound trip, strike or not Grin

WaitMonkey · 20/06/2014 20:14

Ha ha itis. Grin

CheeryName · 20/06/2014 20:14

Teachers striking is just playing into Gove's hands because it makes Joe Public pissed off with teachers.

Hulababy · 20/06/2014 20:18

Proposed dates has been known a while.

Some of our teachers have kept us informed. As a year group we have planned key dates - trip, show, etc. - around it.

owlbegoing · 20/06/2014 20:21

Our school fair is the day of the strike. We've got Police horses, a fire engine, bouncy castle etc booked. The chance of them all being able to change to the same date is slim to none. If some of the teachers strike then the children they teach won't be in (obviously) They're not going to come to school at the end of the day just to come to the fair, which means they miss out.

OP posts:
Hulababy · 20/06/2014 20:22

That's quite unusual isn't it? School fayre on a school day in school hours? I have only ever known them to be at a weekend or sometimes after school.

Hulababy · 20/06/2014 20:24

It isn't just NUT from what I know. Also Unison, Unite and GMB - so support staff, inc caretakers. Not having the caretakers at work can have a huge affect on a school's permission to operate as normal.

owlbegoing · 20/06/2014 20:25

It's at the end of the school day Hulababy

OP posts:
dawndonnaagain · 20/06/2014 20:26

They'll be missing out on a whole lot more when there are no teachers left in teaching thanks to Gove.

jackandjilly · 20/06/2014 20:27

The enchanted forest- I completely agree with you

NadiaWadia · 20/06/2014 20:27

DH is not going to strike this time, because there is a school trip that day which was arranged ages ago. The students/their families paid ages ago and are really looking forward to it. Even his union rep agrees that it would cause negative publicity if the trip has to be cancelled, as kids and parents will obviously be pissed off! The union should have given more notice (and they usually do).
