My friend just posted a photo on FB of her DS 'graduating' from Kindergarten. He was wearing a hat and gown. Seriously.

AIBu to think that this is very daft?

YANBU

Everything has to be an event these days.

I live in America and when my kids left pre-school, there wasn't a cap and gown anywhere. They are solely for the end of High School and for graduating college. Sometimes, what you think of as American is just the idea of a bonkers Brit.

It's so harmless how on earth can this be an issue. It's cute, there are sweet pictures and a party.

And as for devaluing a real degree, do get a grip. They aren't going to be competing with you at interview. I didn't go to my BA degree until about 8 years after I got it. The MA I didn't bother at all.

Gertiegousset,
that was so funny!

I think it is cute and and a celebration of the end of an era. And a nice excuse for cake or pizza.

I hope that you enjoyed it:-)

YANBU. Someone posted a picture of their 3/4 year old's nursery graduation complete with cap and gown on FB the other year.
I'm afraid I snorted and had to sit on my hands not to type something along th lines of 'how bloody stupid.'
Everything's so ridiculously OTT now.

UnderEstherMate · 23/06/2014 19:45

YABU. It's just a bit of fun. DD had her nursery graduation on the same day that I had my actually university graduation. I managed to get back from my ceremony in time for us to get a pic together (although I didn't have my cap since it was hired. Another child was kind enough to lend me his for the pic Grin), before going out for a meal for mine.

The problem is that by making a big swinging deal event out of everything, the genuinely special landmarks lose a bit of their impact and 'specialness'. I think one of the reasons that weddings have become so OTT and expensive is because they're now competing with proms and big fancy 21st bashes etc. which are like weddings used to be.

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 24/06/2014 12:50

Yanbu. I know it makes for cute pictures, but it does annoy me. I pass a school on my way to work that has a massive pictures of teenagers in boards and gowns, saying 'Congratulations on this years graduates' or something like that. They haven't graduated. They've done their GCSEs. That is a big deal, and hard work etc, but it isn't the same thing. It annoys me every day (yes, I do have bigger things to worry about).

I totally agree... my lot have never graduated from any of their schools. Also their high school prom is nowhere near as OTT as what I read about in the UK.
