to think that commuting to work by bike is not that weird.

I ride to work. Its only 6 miles a day and I only do it if there is absolutely no chance of rain so about 3 or 4 times a week. I work in an office and its not a strenuous ride so yes, I am likely to be in a dress.

I get stares from about half of the people I pass, I get comments from about a quarter. Just boys at bus stops or large groups of girls (which I find ridiculous given that they are sitting stationary, waiting for a stuffy stinky bus that's going to take twice as long as my ride... anyway)

My colleagues are the same. "Got the bike today? Chuckle chuckle splurt splurt" or "Cycling tonight, you nutter?"

AIBU to think cycling is not really a hugely eccentric way to travel?

Where I live it is quicker to cycle than drive. I'd say about half the staff in my office cycle in.

Showmethesunshine · 20/06/2014 17:45

It saves me money and keeps me fit. If anything, I think some of my colleagues would like to cycle but aren't fit enough, don't want to get cold/wet or in the case of girls worried about having cycle helmet hair and doing their make up and getting dressed in the office. If anything I kind of feel like people respect me for it

I am in London and cycle to work. I have had supportive comments in the office and no comments at all on the road...I have commented shouted at a couple of drivers though! I wear shorts and a tshirt / lurid yellow top. It's 7.5 miles and (now it's warmer) I get a little sweaty and usually shower at work. No need in the winter!

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 20/06/2014 18:19

I live in a cycling city. The under office bike park is bigger than the car park where I work. The only time colleagues have commented to me is when I was 6 months pregnant and still cycling.

YABU. I've done an 18 mile a day commute through Central London everyday for years. Lycra, road bike, clipless pedals, the works.

Unfortunately, first trimester tiredness has made me give in to the tube. Now at almost 16 weeks I'm up for it again energy wise but seem to have lost my nerve a bit for anything other than local pootling on my lady bike :-( Bit disappointed in myself really, I really miss the adrenaline rush, and feeling wide awake when I get to work.

I wouldn't still be cycling if it was through the centre of London President, I go west to further west (Teddington) so its far less aggressive.

alwaysblonde · 20/06/2014 19:09

I used to cycle from Putney to marble arch everyday. Kept me fit! Nearly got killed by London buses

RuddyDuck · 20/06/2014 19:14

I think outside of London it's still kind of unusual to see people on bikes
err, no, babybat , not unusual at all in lots of places outside London. I live in Cambridge- unusual round here if you don't cycle everywhere.

TheHorseHasBolted · 20/06/2014 19:46

YANBU and I wish I could do it too. It would be pointless in my case, because my work is only 10 minutes' walk away but up a huge hill and I'd probably end up walking anyway.

FWIW, I've seen someone cycling in a ball gown.

People will call you a nutter if you indulge in any physical exertion they would not fancy doing themselves. They're probably just trying to make themselves feel better about their own inactivity.

Ime anywhere with lots of students will have lots of cyclists. I also cycle to work (plus train depending on which of my work sites I have to go too). A few of my colleagues think I'm agreeably bonkers for cycling in the pouring rain, but I never get comments from passers by about cycling. Lots stop to admire the beautiful green Brompton I ride tho'!

WhoWantsToLiveForever · 20/06/2014 20:48

Nah, it's not weird. I am a terrible cyclist; all nervy and wobbly, so I'm envious. It's great exercise and good for the environment. What's not to like?! Oh, maybe helmet hair! That said, my hair is an inexcusable mess most days anyway, so helmet hair would positively improve the station. Wink

WhoWantsToLiveForever · 20/06/2014 20:49

*situation not station! Commuting on my mind. Sad

GrendelsMinim · 20/06/2014 21:07

I get a lot of comments, but they're always positive ones - 'ooh, you must be fit', 'ooh, in the rain too', 'ooh, you're so good'. Which does get rather wearing as I have been doing the same daily commute for the last 10years or so, but the novelty hasn't yet worn off...
