McDonalds and a school trip...

Truly wondering about this situation.

Long, hot day. School trip. Reception class so 4 & 5 year olds. Left at 8.30 this morning. Due back at 4pm. Finally arrived back at 6.45pm after the bus broke down on the way home. The school were communicating by text all the way through the afternoon keeping us updated.

We've just picked up the children to be told they have been fed... McDonalds. Personally, I don't mind, better that she is fed, watered and it was next to where they had broken down. Bear in mind they were waiting in a hot bus with no aircon for a replacement coach.

However other parents were shouting at the head teacher, for everyone to hear. Apparently no one ever feeds her children mcdonalds. They've never had it. Thinks it's a disgrace. Some of the dads were also agreeing.

Would you mind? Allergies and food intolerances and preferences accounted for, would you be angry enough to shout at the teachers about it?

How on earth is Mcdonalds overpriced! It's two quid!

Nohootingchickenssleeping · 19/06/2014 20:15

There's no pleasing some people. Teachers are people not machines. Not just there for the kids but they have their own lives and give up so much of their own time. I don't have the patience to do it but my family are teachers.

Lesleythegiraffe · 19/06/2014 20:26

As usual teachers are damned if they do and damned if they don't. So I guess these parents would also have been shouting at the HT if their little darlings had been left on a hot bus with nothing to eat.

I hardly think any child is going to be scarred for life by eating a McDonalds

ForalltheSaints · 19/06/2014 20:27

I would mind. There must have been a small shop or Tesco Metro about where something such as apples or sandwiches could have been bought.

Waltonswatcher · 19/06/2014 20:29

Pre made sarnies would have contained more crap and just as much packaging .

Waltonswatcher · 19/06/2014 20:30

I hope this thread is genuine ! I can't believe in defending the devil like this ... My mung bean mates will disown me .

magpiegin · 19/06/2014 20:32

Forallthesaints- do you really think a ready made sandwich is better then a happy meal? Have you seen the fat/ salt content on them?

Sirzy · 19/06/2014 20:33

a shop which at that time in the evening would have had 30 (or however many children there were) pre made sandwhiches available in fillings that the children would actually eat?

Madamecastafiore · 19/06/2014 20:35

Quite a lot of fat kids at my school were not allowed to eat McDonald's - they were fat because they used to sneak I there and have a Big Mac meal and a large coke and an apple pie or 2.

I bet all you perfect parents will find those nasty paper straw covers in your kids pockets once they have a little money and freedom.

FFS, it's a burger in a bun, it's not crack or glue and I bet what they have been fed is better quality than the shite most school canteens dish up.

ikeaismylocal · 19/06/2014 20:36

Can you imagine the faff with sandwiches? It would be unlikely the teachers would be able to buy large amounts of the same sandwich, the teachers would have ended up standing at the amount of the bus going "we have 2 BLT sandwiches, hands up who wants a BLT, ok 3 of you want a BLT, unfortunately that's not possible, ok we have a carrot and hummus sandwich, who wants that one.... No one?"

ilovesooty · 19/06/2014 20:38

For heavens' sake. They broke down next to MDs. So you'd have expected one of the teachers to go off hiking to find an alternative?

rideyourbike · 19/06/2014 20:38

I would be delighted that someone has the sense to feed and water the poor children. We don't have McDonald's very often, it's emergency travelling food, and a special treat. I bet all the kids were delighted!

fluffyfanjo · 19/06/2014 20:39

Yep,I can really see that an apple will satisfy hungry, thirsty kids.

Do you really think a sandwich is automatically healthier than a burger or nuggets ? also please tell me where you can buy a sandwich and a drink for £2 ? What Tesco metro has 30 odd sandwiches on the shelf ?

andsmile · 19/06/2014 20:40

I tell you wat some parents want to seriously get over themselves in that school then. Wtaf were the staff supposed to feed them.

It was an appropriate response given the circumtances in which they found themselves.

So OTT and clearly anger displacement.

Andrewofgg · 19/06/2014 20:42

Yes, and of course a shop would have somewhere for them to sit. And loos. Wise up ForalltheSaints

Madamecastafiore · 19/06/2014 20:44

19 grams of fat In a hamburger/chicken nugget happy meal.

32 grams of fat in a Tesco BLT.

vestandknickers · 19/06/2014 20:44

Ok, so they were next to a McDonalds, but surely they could have placed an Ocado delivery to come to the stranded bus with organic falafels and pomegranate juice. Teachers just don't go the extra mile these days do they?

LittleMisslikestobebythesea · 19/06/2014 20:45

I would just be pleased that my children had been fed and watered.

Mcdonalds was easy as it can cater for the large numbers and allergies can be catered for.

Well done to school I say and they paid for it.

I bet the same parents would have complained if they had nothing!

My school put on a workshop this week and I emailed the head to thank them and said how much my son enjoyed it, people are quick to complain these days, so I thought I would compliment them, I even got a reply thanking me.

Hulababy · 19/06/2014 20:45

ForalltheSaints

You would seriously be upset/minded that the teachers had been stuck with a bus full of children, for 2 hours+ extra than planned, and that they had fed your child with the most convenient food at their disposal, at no cost to you, so they didn't go hungry?

Really?

And can you imagine the faff with trying to buy sandwiches for them all - most prepacked sandwiches have various sauces and dressings, so getting them all to choose one they would like would be a pain. And usually pre packed sandwiches, some fruit and a drink, at a service station, would be dearer than the price of a happy meal as well.

I mean really - how bad do people really think one Happy Meal is going to be, in the grand scheme of things?! It's one meal. ONE.

KnittyNorah · 19/06/2014 20:45

Can you imagine the alternative.
My child was left hungry and thirsty for hours.
The teachers did nothing, Im off to phone the Daily Fail and I will pose along side my 4 year old and we will do Sadface.

The teachers did their best, get over it .

KenDoddsDadsDog · 19/06/2014 20:46

Imagine the outrage if they were starving, thirsty and had accidents?
The only thing they sell in service station shops is camping chairs and Krispy Kreme.
Good on the teachers !

andsmile · 19/06/2014 20:46

madam excelent post - Im often wonder about the demonising of Mc Donalds so much when a lot of people (obviously I dont know if its the same ones who post - pure lentil weavers or not) have in their freezers processed crap in boxes that they heat up - 'freezer surprise' anyone.

snozzlemaid · 19/06/2014 20:47

I definitely think you should make the school aware that you are grateful that they looked after the children so well so they know not all the parents are ungrateful buggers.
