To be annoyed at OBEM last night?

Misspilly88 · 19/06/2014 16:11

Really disappointed about the way they treated the hypnobirthing mother on OBEM last night...making snide comments and joking about her in the staff room.
Isn't it a good thing that she is birthing naturally therefore saving valuable NHS resources and bringing a happy healthy baby into the world the way she wanted? I am about to give birth and would hate to think people were talking about my choices like that....

I just watched that.

I've done hynobirthing.

I didn't see any of what you are describing Confused

Sidge · 19/06/2014 16:27

I didn't see any snide comments or joking about her.

I just saw a midwife saying to her colleagues she was worried she'd say the wrong thing, or interrupt the hypnobirthing process.

I'm more traumatised that a couple called their beautiful baby boy Wilbert.

Oldraver · 19/06/2014 16:39

I did an OMG at Wilbert. There is Wilbert at DS's school, his parents are Polish so maybe its more of a Polish name ?

Gimmesomemore · 19/06/2014 16:41

Re Wilbert, I've met a baby Wilberforce recently!

cornishbaby · 19/06/2014 16:42

I saw one comment by a pregnant staff member who said she was pregnant and wanted to use hypnobirthing.. and said something like don't laugh. .I know you'll think I'm silly! but I don't think it was snide and I thought the allocated mw was lovely and supportive.

Hypnobirthing is fab.

But i think your getting a bit hung up on nothing.

TurtleyAmazing · 19/06/2014 16:45

I gave birth in southmead hospital at the time OBEM was being filmed.( i got given an application but fuck that!!!) out of the many many midwives i met whilst there i cannot say a bad word about any of them.

The staff there are so kind and helpful, you can have a laugh and a joke with them and they will do anything within their power to make you feel comfortable.

KnackeredMuchly · 19/06/2014 16:46

I think Wilbert's a cute name!

cornishbaby · 19/06/2014 16:48

Ditto turtleyamazing

TurtleyAmazing · 19/06/2014 17:02

cornishbaby, did they give you an application too? I must of been asked at least 5 times if i would like to participate in the show. They just couldn't understand why i didn't want the birth of my first child to be broadcast on tv.

MOTU · 19/06/2014 17:07

I second what turtley said and also had multiple applications sent, they even sent one once everything had been filmed to see if I'd agree to a shot of newborn ds being used even though we weren't part of the show! But the care and staff were brill, can't complain, they even humoured my soft lighting water birth plan despite it being quite obvious ds was a whopper (ended up beng shoulder distocia!)

thatwhichwecallarose · 19/06/2014 17:10

YABU.

I didn't see any negativity at all and am going to read up on it in time for dd2's appearance in 6 weeks!

Misspilly88 · 19/06/2014 17:18

Haha maybe I was being over sensitive given I'll be in her situation in a couple of weeks and want to do it like that! Glad you all had positive experiences. Just seemed like they were trying to portray them as weird.

OP posts:
rylansteeth · 19/06/2014 17:19

I too didn't see any negativity or snide comments; the midwives all seem absolutely lovely, and they all seem to want the women in their care to have a great birth experience.

Andrewofgg · 19/06/2014 17:25

Gimmesomemore Was little Wilberforce black? I believe that that name is common in the Caribbean because of the campaign against slavery and the slave-trade.

gordyslovesheep · 19/06/2014 17:29

I didn't see that at all - if anything they seemed interested in hypnobirthing and where saying they didn't know much about it - not micky taking at all - plus the birth was amazing and calm which was also positive

farewellfigure · 19/06/2014 17:33

I didn't think it was snidey. And I was AMAZED at the birth. The mum was incredible.

I was annoyed at how they tricked us at the end into thinking Wilfred's twin sister didn't make it though (Caitlin?). I was a gibbering wreck by the end.

Talisawasnotsupposedtobethere · 19/06/2014 17:43

That couple with the twins was so lovely and I was really blubbing when they were born. And then it was revealed they had called the boy Wilbert and I was like 'oh'.

JackieBrambles · 19/06/2014 18:00

The hypno birth was really calm and amazing.

I said to my DH I was really jealous, my back to back labour ending in an emcs couldn't have been more different :-(

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 19/06/2014 18:10

OP you are being very oversensitive. And when you're giving birth you won't give a fuck about anyone judging your birthing choices.

Hope it all goes lovely and smoothly for you. Please try to keep an open mind. If you have very clear expectations, the
experience will come as a massive sock and you may end up feeling disappointed.

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 19/06/2014 18:11

*shock

thatstoast · 19/06/2014 18:26

I'm a bit clueless about hypnobirthing, how does it save NHS resources?

softlysoftly · 19/06/2014 18:27

Jackie I've done both. My back 2 back DD1 was long messy and a bit of a nightmare all around.

Hypnobirthing with DD2 I honest to god trance/slept through the entire thing. Then delivered her head on the pavement as I walked into the unit calm as you like.

Due DC3 in a week and hoping to do it the same way again though hopefully in a bed this time!

The only bit that got me was the DH wittering on. I found that using my ipod for trance music worked to knock me out. The last thing you want is someone blathering on to break your trance.

softlysoftly · 19/06/2014 18:31

thats theRCM I believe are running trials on it at the moment to see if it reduces intervention therefore I'm assuming cost of drugs, csec etc.

that isn't proven yet however and though my experience was wonderful the founder of hypnobirthing (Marie Mongan) book doesn't claim complications won't occur just that it can help you focus if they do.

claims that people who have complicated births could somehow have avoided it by hypnobirthing is bull and offensive and puts people off considering it.

thatstoast · 19/06/2014 19:05

Thanks for the info softly

bakingtins · 19/06/2014 19:14

I gave birth at Southmead 4 weeks ago and had Bridget looking after me (the MW in the hypnobirthing segment) I had used the Natal Hypnotherapy CDs to prepare and had a very calm, though extremely quick (80min) birth of DC3. Bridget said afterwards "that was amazing, you just breathed that baby out" so she's obviously picking up the lingo. It made me chuckle when I then saw last night's episode Wink
