Read and run

I'm relatively new to Mumsnet and have enjoyed reading lots of topics. However, one thing has consistently confused me: why, when someone posts asking specifically for advice, do people so often reply, 'I didn't want to read and run but unfortunately I can't offer any advice/insight/help whatsoever'? Why post at all, and why not just leave it to those who CAN provide some advice/insight/help for the OP, which is what they've requested?

Thoughts? Am I missing the big picture?

Because that can bump it back up into Active Conversations, so that is gets seen by someone who is able to give advice.

I think they do it if the OP is in distress...as a way of letting them know someone IS listening and also because their comment will bump the thread up and someone else can see it and answer more usefully. If they don't post at all then there's a risk the post will dissapear to the bottom of the pile.

I guess some people want to offer sympathy. Some OPs are heart-wrenching and very sad and people don't want to ignore them without at least reaching out a little to the OP. It would be dreadful to pour your heart out on here and then not get any replies.

I posted something this morning and haven't had a single response yet, but it was dreadfully dull Grin

I think to show someone is listening, & it often bumps the thread out of "unanswered threads" so more chance of the OP getting answers from someone who knows.

Keep reading & lurking Lemon & you'll pick up the weird & wonderful ways of MN!

Oh, yes, the bumping element is something I hadn't thought of at all so that makes sense (as does a general show of compassion) - happens so often than I knew I must have been missing something!! Thanks all

Because it feels voyeuristic to read and run. sometimes I open things thinking I may be able to give some insight etc but then after reading further realise I cant. In RL if someone asked for help or advice etc you wouldn't just listen and walk away saying nothing so I think posting you cant help but didn't want to read and run shows you took the time to stop and listen but just genuinely don't know how to help.
