aibu, mature trees being cut down

We live on a tree lined street, very old, large trees, no idea what type.

We have had a letter round from the Council stating that some of these trees need to be taken down due to damage to the road/footpath. Think it's about six trees in total.

One of these tree is actually outside our house. The pavement is seriously damaged and very uneven due to the tree roots.

There has been uproar in the street about people not wanting these trees to be cut down. So much so that there is now a public meeting to discuss this matter next week.

Once the tree is removed a new tree will be planted in six months time.

AIBU to really want the tree in front of our house to be removed?

Mature trees cause subsidence and if the council do nothing about the trees then insurers can sue them for the cost of repairs. Its sad when beautiful tress are cut down, but sometimes there is no choice.

Yanbu, but I must confess to feeling a pang of regret whenever I see a tree being cut down because of the buildings/pavements around it.

It's a shame but hopefully they'll replant with a more suitabley sized tree for the environment.

I probably work for the company contracted to do it. We will plant lovely new ones from Oct/Nov and they will look new but nice.

Councils get so much grief for the tree root damage caused to property, it's a shame as old trees are lovely but the chippings will be reused so no waste!

it is a shame but better to take out a few and plant replacements so that there are always going to be mature trees.

TBH, it sounds as though your Council is being proactive and sensible about the trees and the damage to your pavements. Our Council does this too - thank heavens.
