Liking olives is NOT a milestone

Maybe it's just because I live in a naice area, but one of the most frequent boasts I hear, alongside the usual ones about reading levels and musical/sporting abilities, is that someone's DD or DS loves olives, which I frankly find really odd (not the child liking olives, but that it's considered something to boast about). Liking olives isn't a milestone, is it? I'm quite bed at middle class parenting, I'd never even heard of NCT until after I'd given birth, but the olives thing really puzzles me.

(Full disclosure, my DD hates olives and thinks they're the work of the devil).

vvviola · 18/06/2014 11:36

I've never heard of that. What does it say about me then that I hate the things. In fact, of all of us only DH likes them the freak

Trooperslane · 18/06/2014 11:38

I hope it isn't.

I started eating them when I was about 30!

WorraLiberty · 18/06/2014 11:38

If your child doesn't like home made granola by the age of 3, you may need to move to another area Wink

I agree with her though, olives are rank.

youbethemummylion · 18/06/2014 11:39

At what age is the olive milestone supposed to be achieved? I fear I have severe developmental delay as I am 30 and have not yet reached this milestone. However I am very advanced in the hummus eating department.

Cornettoninja · 18/06/2014 11:40

I remember wanting to like olives when I was little because they just looked so delicious in the delicatessen. Never did till my 20's though and presumed it was down to my taste buds maturing - didn't consider that I just hadn't reached a milestone yet Grin

Seeline · 18/06/2014 11:41

I am 46 and have still to reach said milestone. However, I can walk, talk, read and drive. I have even managed to bring up two DCs of my own over the last 12 years. However, they have also failed to reach that milestone..... There must be a genetic cause Grin

MooncupGoddess · 18/06/2014 11:42

Haha. I think it's on the list of targets for three-year-olds, along with recognising the Waitrose logo and singing Frere Jacques (in French, obvs).

GoldenGytha · 18/06/2014 11:42

Oh dear, I' m 47 and hate the things!

No hope for me, us there? Grin

LoonvanBoon · 18/06/2014 11:43

Is it a boast? I don't know. I remember being surprised that my children seemed to like strong flavours - including olives, anchovies, capers etc. -from a fairly young age. I guess I'd just assumed that children tend to like blander flavours / plainer foods.

So no, of course it's not a milestone - & you've got to watch for the salt content - but I suppose it's nice, if you like those foods (& I do) that your children can enjoy them too & share the same meals.

My PIL would agree with your DD that olives are the work of the devil. They're odd about them - like it's a family policy that nobody's allowed to like them. They were both very shocked when they saw DH eating one - "You never used to eat olives!" said with accusatory look at me (evil influence, obviously). And they're the ones that can't seem to get over the fact that our boys like them too.

MangoBiscuit · 18/06/2014 11:44

DD1 and DH both hate olives. Suited me just fine as I love them and didn't have to share! Sadly, DD2 is now weaning/weaned, and she likes them. She seems to like a lot of the food that I previously haven't had to share, like mushrooms, and seafood, and hummus. Bugger.

Beeyump · 18/06/2014 11:44

I want to boast about my niece liking olives Blush. Not entirely sure of my reasons, but it just seems impressive to see a little girl eating and enjoying them. She likes strong cheese too

Stinkle · 18/06/2014 11:46

I'm 39 and can't stand them. I've obviously not met all my milestones Grin

worldgonecrazy · 18/06/2014 11:46

My daughter likes olives and always has.

Is that a boast? Not really - it's just stating a fact.

Maybe the fact that you think liking olives is either a boast or a milestone says more about your opinion of olives than anything else?

MysweetAudrina · 18/06/2014 11:47

My dd loves olives and has from an early age. I always thought it was an unusual food for a small child to like and am sure I did pass comment on it to family and friends. Poor ds thought it was a grape and nearly lost his life when he realised his mistake.

canweseethebunnies · 18/06/2014 11:47

Yes, it is a boast Loon as it shows how middle-class your dc's tastes are. If the will

canweseethebunnies · 18/06/2014 11:48

Sorry..

If they will only eat fish fingers and happy meals the you are, of course, as common as muck Grin

KatraAllandra · 18/06/2014 11:49

I keep trying to like them but generally find them far too salty, and on the basis of the saltiness I'd be reluctant to feed them to a small child (still waiting for PFB to arrive so everything may change of course).

Is / should the salt content be a concern?

SholerAndChocolate · 18/06/2014 11:50

I have no idea if my dd's like them! I can't stand them, and as I do the shopping every week, I don't buy them!

canweseethebunnies · 18/06/2014 11:50

Mine doesn't like olives, btw! (Although I do)

worldgonecrazy · 18/06/2014 11:52

canweseethebunnies I never knew that food could be divided into class? What about if you buy your olives at Asda - does that make them working class olives?

buddles · 18/06/2014 11:52

I've never given my DS an olive. I've never had one, I can just tell I won't like them by looking at them (yes I'm weird)

mrstigs · 18/06/2014 11:52

Should I be proud at this point that my dd (2) is currently eating a pitta bread stuffed with greek salad and loving it. And also throw in that the Greek salad is the bit left over from the bowl I made for my other dc's packed lunch this morning. Wink . Got to be honest I never saw it as a milestone personally. In fact it's a bit annoying as I love it myself and it means less for me. Smile
Nah OP it's just food. My dcs are as happy with character spaghetti on toast as they are with hummus and carrot wraps or olives.

LoonvanBoon · 18/06/2014 11:53

Grin at working class olives from asda. I've even bought them from Lidl.

mrstigs · 18/06/2014 11:53

Oh and we all love black olives but only ds can stomach a green olive. Green olives are rank. Grin

Hazchem · 18/06/2014 11:54

I'm 35 this birthday and only just about like olives now :)
