because my heart sinks a little when I see it's being delivered by Hermes?

It means it will take ages.

It means it could arrive at any old random time.

It means if I am out they will take it away and there is no workable 'pick it up myself' option. One time I happened to be speaking to one of Johnnie's minions on the phone and they gave me the option of instructing for it to be left in my absence, but I don't seem to be able to select this of my own volition.

And it seems to be more and more things coming via Hermes.

Aggghh!

YANBU, it does really depend on where you live though. Even our Yodel guy is fine here (!!) but in my old place the Hermes courier refused to knock or ring the bell. If she couldn't actually see you inside the house then off she would go again. When I complained she said 'I don't deliver unless I am sure you are in.' But she wouldn't knock or ring the bell! Deathhhhhh.

I think Hermes delivers asos. They are good I find, because they text update one hour slots and that it has been delivered.

Merrylegs · 18/06/2014 08:42

The thing about Yodel is that at least you can tweet them and they will contact the driver and find out what's happened.

We are rural and not on sat nav (although v easy to find with directions and a regular OS map). So when the yodel guy kept not turning up I was able to give directions to the company and now he knows where we are it's fine.

Hermes otoh you can only contact through the original company you ordered from. So you can't actually get a message to the people delivering because 'your contract is not with hermes'

They have 'lost' two parcels so far. They are not lost. They just couldn't find us. So where do these 'lost' parcels go? No idea.

If I see 'delivered by Hermes' I don't order.

frostyfingers · 18/06/2014 08:53

Not as much as mine does when it's coming via Yodel....!

merlottime · 18/06/2014 08:56

I have had a few deliveries recently from Amazon directly (not using Royal Mail, Hermes or Yodel) - all fine if you happen to be in, but if you are not they are a nightmare. They do not have anywhere you can you and pick up your item - so you could be in a situation where you are never able to get your parcel. I complained but i think it went on deaf ears. We should start a campaign for all retailers to give customers the choice of which company will be used the sent the parcels with!

bookcave · 18/06/2014 09:00

I'm always pleased when I get the "will be delivered by Hermes" email as our Hermes lady is fab. Couldn't be better.

Amazon Logistics on the other hand - total pain.

mswibble · 18/06/2014 10:23

Before Amazon switched I ordered something and when the confirmation stated it would be delivered by Yodel I rang them to say that unless the parcel was delivered by Royal Mail to cancel the order. They wouldnt switch so I cancelled my £150 order and went elsewhere. I wasnt risking another high value order 'disappearing', especially as it was a present for someone.

hollycomputer · 18/06/2014 10:31

Hermes tried to deliver something to our house yesterday. We have no idea what it is as we haven't ordered anything. The two cards through the door say '1 parcel' and '5 parcels' but there's no address so we can't even tell if it's meant for us!

CharlesRyder · 18/06/2014 16:00

Compo I've just grinned like an idiot in public at your Herpes post. Grin

This sounds like it isn't true, but it really is.

I had a phone call a few months back saying that they had attempted delivery and I wasn't in but they gave it to my mother.

I said, hang on, my mother died in 2003. There was a very uncomfortable pause. Then I realised it was something I had sent to a friend of mine and it was her mother who had opened the door. I apologised to the driver as I thought it may have given him a shock.
