to not want to use downstairs loo

OH thinks I am. He runs a counselling business from our house. Clients occasionally use our downstairs loo. We have loos upstairs. I cannot use the loo if a client has used it (unless it has been cleaned). On a scale of 1 to 10 how weird is that?

I can't really be picky, as we moved specifically to get a downstairs loo. I'm disabled with limited sensation and mobility and it's an essential thing.

It doesn't matter who has been, I'm immensely grateful to have one.

Brabra · 16/06/2014 03:15

Really really weird.
I just don't get it?

Shakshuka · 16/06/2014 03:24

I totally get it. I'm still very grateful to have access to toilets, in fact, being weird about loos makes you more, not less, grateful to have your own nice clean one!! It doesn't limit my life, I've lived and travelled in Africa and Asia and dealt with the toilet situation even if it did cause a lot of angst and constipation but I've been like this since I was at primary school. I remember that I wouldn't wee all day and come home busting!

redshifter · 16/06/2014 03:43

Totally weird

londonrach · 16/06/2014 05:53

The queen uses the toilet (shocked). Op very strange it's a toilet! ( loooks at lone toilet in flat)

Brabra · 16/06/2014 05:54

Shakshuka, the angst 'and constipation' doesn't sound like you dealt with it all that well really.

Shakshuka · 16/06/2014 11:19

The toilets I faced on an overnight bus journey in India about 15 years ago would have caused some angst in the most hardened toilet user. I'm talking extreme toilet situations, not those I face in my day to day life!

15 years ago and it still causes anguish?

PrincessBabyCat · 17/06/2014 04:17

The only time I get freaked out about using a toilet after someone else did is if the seat is still warm. Confused

MackerelOfFact · 17/06/2014 04:26

A perfect 10 of weird.

Presumably most of you toilet-angsters have changed nappies? What in the world are you likely to find in your toilet that is any worse than the contents of one of those?! And given that most adults are continent and able to dispose of their own waste matter using the handy flush function supplied with the majority of domestic toilets, you are pretty likely to be faced with... a normal-looking loo.

I'd love to take some of you to ex-PILs house - compostable loo without any flush function, just a shovel and a bucket of soil to throw over your business! Grin It smelt... organic. (Oh and no warm running water to wash hands either).

Shakshuka · 17/06/2014 13:09

No, it doesn't cause anguish now :)

Although i must admit I do still shudder when i think of the slow flow of faeces and urine between the toilet stalls over an open sewer!

The point is that you can have a weird quirk about toilets and yet still live a normal and full life! If it gets to the point where it's preventing you doing stuff that you want to do, then that's when it really becomes an issue.

Is it weird? Yeah - although at least on MN I've learnt that it's relatively common. Is it different to any other strange quirks people may have? Not really - and it's only a problem if it really starts to impact on day to day life.

Theodorous · 17/06/2014 13:16

Once you have had diarrhoea in Bangladesh you can poo anywhere, believe me.

WaitingForMyMam · 17/06/2014 13:44

10/10 on the weirdness scale I'm afraid.

angelos02 · 17/06/2014 13:50

Always amazes me that some people have issues with using toilets other than their own. Same as apparently some women won't have a shit in the toilet at work. Very odd.

Jayne35 · 17/06/2014 14:00

I don't think the not having a shit in work toilets is a hygiene issue though, more about being uncomfortable within earshot of other people Grin

Agree 10/10 on weirdness for not using your own loo if someone else has used it. What if you had a party (where you don't always know everyone well as friends bring friends etc...)? How awful not being able to use the toilet for hours....or worse cleaning it every five minutes.

Pipbin · 17/06/2014 16:19

You ladies who won't poo anywhere but home, what do you do if you are staying with friends?
I'm also guessing none of you have ever been to a festival.
I'll shit anywhere, I care not, because everyone shits. We all do it. Your shit might smell different to other people's shit, but its all still shit.

squoosh · 17/06/2014 16:47

MN is awash with people with toilet issues.

I will happily wee and poo in whichever clean toilet presents itself to me.

10/10 weird. I have ulcerative colitis and when I have to go, I have to go. I just get on with it, but it does not make me feel particularly good when people remark - as ILoveJudgeJudy said her colleagues do - on how disgusting it is to move your bowels in a public toilet. Try having a chronic condition where there's no choice!

Theodorous · 17/06/2014 18:26

I used to have IBS and once pooed into my lunchbox in the back of my (blacked out windowed) truck on the highway in Doha rush hour traffic. I don't feel dirty or embarrassed, just glad of the black windows and a handy vessel. Not sure why people feel so precious about pooing but each to his own.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 17/06/2014 19:22

I'm with the OP. I will only use one of the 3 loos in our house. I will, however, happily relieve myself in a stable, which some folk find unsavoury. I'm not ok with exposure to other's people's excrement. But then, I'm not really ok with exposure to lots of things about other people. Perhaps it limits my life, by some people's standards (which I don't necessarily share), but I still think everyone else is way weirder for not caring Grin
