To think there is a RIGHT way to cut a cake

My MIL had us all over to her house for FIL's birthday. 10 of us in total. A beautiful circular chocolate fudge topped cake was produced, the kind that's all smooth and silky on top. Almost a shame to cut into it. Almost.

Now in my world this cake would be cut in half and 10 equal (triangular?) pieces would be cut and everyone would be happy with their lot.

MIL produced a knife and did a hack and scrape onto a plate motion, for each person. We all got what looked like leftovers and a sad lump of cake was left on the table. Don't even get me started on the heating of the ice cream in the microwave before it could be served.

Clearly MIL was wrong and shouldn't be left in charge of cake in the future. AIBU?

This thread is so cruel if you're on a diet. Should never have opened it but was drawn irresistibly like a moth to a flame ...

As a teenager I worked at a cafe in the grounds of a famous palace.

We had to cut the cakes into 11 equal pieces. I always had one runt piece at the end, no matter how many times I tried to get it right.

Cake is cake IMO Grin Life is too short to worry about slicing cakes (as long as you get some).

Floggingmolly · 14/06/2014 16:44

What's with the microwaving ice cream??? Shock

rosiedays · 14/06/2014 16:50

Op yanbu. The picture is a perfect example of how to cut a cake into 10. Anything else would bring disappointment.

Lweji all pudding was weighed in our house. There were often a lot of us. Grin Chores were also rewarded with extra rations.

coruskate, it was run by Trusthouse Forte in the 1970s.

They hated everyone, especially the customers Grin

I once saw a genius way to make a round cake feed more (obvs smaller slices) - place a small teaplate on top.of the cake and cut round it, leaving a smaller roundcake to be cut into wedges, and then cut the outer donut shape into smaller cake portions.

Genius.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 14/06/2014 17:03

This might help explain what I mean

To think there is a RIGHT way to cut a cake
TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/06/2014 17:08

Ooh think I like it. The kids won't though; they already think I'm stingy with the cake.

StickyFloor · 14/06/2014 17:10

NO NO NO NO are you all amateurs?

First, you cut a small circle in the middle of the cake - don't remove it, just leave it in place.

Then you cut each segment piece up to the edge of the circle - the inner bit is not such a thin pointy bit so you don't get collapsing pieces.

Finally when the whole cake has been cut into sections you cut the inner circle in half and serve as 2 pieces.

Ta-dah!

StickyFloor · 14/06/2014 17:10

X-posts!

Wickeddevil · 14/06/2014 17:16

Well I declare that You are both U. The method I prefer Is to cut 2 slices then serve the first one. That way you don't end up with a messy slices or a messy cake from cutting it in half.
Cake Cake

OOAOML · 14/06/2014 17:17

Maybe Lakeland or similar will come out with a cake portion measure? I'm thinking either a board with marks round the edge or some kind of doily template that goes on the top.Smile

OOAOML · 14/06/2014 17:18

And re ice cream - I don't like hard ice cream but surely you just take it out of the freezerca while before you serve it?

Lesshastemorespeed · 14/06/2014 17:20

Microwaved or not, Ice cream with choc fudge cake is just wrong.

Choc fudge cake should be served warm with cream surely?

AmazingMorning · 14/06/2014 17:20

I was obviously raised by a pack wolves... I just estimate! Shock

Lesshastemorespeed · 14/06/2014 17:22

this is what you need anyway.

Deverethemuzzler · 14/06/2014 17:26

I cut a Y shape.
That way you know how to cut the rest.

hugoagogo · 14/06/2014 17:27

Ice cream does not go with cake- yuk

pengymum · 14/06/2014 17:35

Sorry StickyFloor - I was with you up till last paragraph!

Finally when whole cake has been cut into sections, pick up inner section and scoff! Grin

TillyTellTale · 14/06/2014 18:02

Andrew Now, expiate your misdeeds and go shopping. We're completely, completely out of cake!

Andrewofgg · 14/06/2014 18:14

Part of my Saturday morning routine is to do the main shop and phone DW to ask what "naughty food" she wants. And we've just eaten it. And it was delicious!
