I get this impression and have no idea why - is this my imagination or is this the case?

Where are you originally from?

I am thoroughly English.

Per SE.
My ipad autocorrected that.

whitepuddingsupper · 14/06/2014 10:32

I'm going to throw a spanner in the works and say that while I like Edinburgh and Glasgow my favourite Scottish city is Dundee. Got a lot of happy memories from there and it's where I met my DH.

MorrisZapp · 14/06/2014 10:34

Fanjo, you have out-epicentred me :)

I walk through the Grange most days. Freakin love it. My hippy mum approves too, as there are still ageing alternative types there in big rambling houses they bought in 1972 with their trainee social worker or lecturing salaries You can spot the camper vans and dilapidated Citroens with 'Nuclear Power, No Thanks' stickers in amongst the Beemers and Mercs.

So really, it's rather diverse :)

shockinglybadteacher · 14/06/2014 10:34

I used to live in Pilton. Actually quite liked it, nice community vibe even if parts of the community had their issues (and who disnae?)

I wouldn't live in Morningside if you paid me, and you'd have to pay me a fucking shitload of cash to even vaguely think about it for one second. Sure Mumsnet Morningsiders are lovely but shame about the rest of them...

PhaedraIsMyName · 14/06/2014 10:34

WildThong I've done Queen Street to Central by taxi too. Another one that makes them see red is Queen Street to Blytheswood Square. And to compound it he asked me which side of the Square to which my answer was I've no idea, that's why I'm in a taxi.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/06/2014 10:35

I walk through the amazing houses to go to work.

Having a drool along the way.

MorrisZapp · 14/06/2014 10:36

Yes I do have a blue rinse. Also a mink coat and hat on layaway.

Mrsjayy · 14/06/2014 10:37

My dd works in dundee sometimes she loves a wander about when she is on a break

MorrisZapp · 14/06/2014 10:37

Shockingly :(

Why you no likey the EH10s?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/06/2014 10:38

I used to live at end of Gorgie.

Was a nightmare. Stones and eggs thrown at windows, doors and bins set on fire every week, street like a rubbish dump, junkies, neds,

Worst time of our lives tbh.

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 14/06/2014 10:38

I'm from England and DH is from Scotland, moved around the UK with work and now live in the South East of England.

WildThong · 14/06/2014 10:38

I've always had this romantic notion of Morningside ladies taking tea and scones. And wearing hats. Look at this old postcard, such a sweet representation.

PhaedraIsMyName · 14/06/2014 10:38

The Discovery is well worth a visit in Dundee.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/06/2014 10:38

Reverse snobbery is just as bad shockingly.

Lucked · 14/06/2014 10:38

Oh I started something with the private schools comment, I wasn't implying anything about the number of Scottish children who go to private school. I am in glasgow and went to private secondary, my kids will do the same. All my collegues kids have been in private school since P1.

I was just pointing out there are lots of threads about English private schools and mums with kids at eton and harrow etc but hardly any about Scottish privates schools giving the impression of it being a mostly English site.

We seem to stress a lot less about schools in general, or not talk about it.

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 14/06/2014 10:39

Visit the Cairngorms regularly, love it.

KatieKaye · 14/06/2014 10:39

Buggers - a sign gets you upset? Really?
The "Honest Toun" bit is not modern marketing, it dates back to 1300s. We've got real history, a great beach, 2 golf courses, a race course and easy access to Edinburgh.

I understand what others are saying about having no "sense" of Glasgow. The centre always feels claustrophobic compared to the New Town.

Loving the "unbearable smugness of Bruntsfield"! And remembering the old Chic Murray's hotel facing the links. Which will date me nicely.

PhaedraIsMyName · 14/06/2014 10:40

Oh and Kate Atkinson's Emotionally Weird might be set in Dundee but is weepingly funny for any one who was at a Scottish university in the 70s.

MorrisZapp · 14/06/2014 10:41

Dundee has an astonishing history. I love the old nickname Shetoon, ie a city run by women. The jute and jam industries meant that many women supported their menfolk. At one point they had the highest proportion of bingo halls in the country, I think that says it all :)

As an Edinburgher I can only drool at Dundees merchant housing stock going for a comparative song. Fisher and Donaldsons bakery and the revamped Wellgate Centre, what's not to envy.

MorrisZapp · 14/06/2014 10:44

WildThong I love it! My dad did a painting of that scene too, it's a bit iconic. The scene I mean. Will attempt an upload once I'm dressed.

KatieKaye · 14/06/2014 10:45

I went to school in Morningside and have a soft spot for it. I guess I'll be like one of those ladies in the postcard. I already have the westie...

MilkandCereal · 14/06/2014 10:45

Apparently I don't have a Glaswegian accent either. I've been asked if I'm from Dundee,Aberdeen,Edinburgh or Inverness,by various people. It sounds reasonably Glaswegian to me,if not particuarly strong.

PhaedraIsMyName · 14/06/2014 10:47

My experience of Edinburgh private schools is they discourage the little darlings to think of themselves as little darlings. They do share facilities. My son's one used to make their playing fields available for sports days and shared a Russian language teacher and I think classics teachers are shared too.

MorrisZapp · 14/06/2014 10:48

Fanjo I lived down Leith Walk and feel every ounce of your pain :)

Mrsjayy · 14/06/2014 10:48

I think we stress less because we dont have the admissions angst and no bloody ofsted reports , we just send the weans to school , woman I know 4 dc all went private 1 didnt like it so she sent her to the local high school, , dd went to uni with a girl whos dad was very high up In the royal bank and no its not a Russell group its UHI, imo scots dont care maybe im wrong
