I get this impression and have no idea why - is this my imagination or is this the case?

Where are you originally from?

I am thoroughly English.

Another Scot here.

Just been hearing about the heatwave that is coming Britain's way. Just a wee guess but I reckon we won't get it as bad. Yay for Scotland!

EddieStobbart · 14/06/2014 09:03

Phaedra, no I don't think you imagined it. I've just never seen that arrangement in a scottish rural state school, only private schools, and you said it was very common in rural areas so I wonder where that was. I appreciate that just because I haven't come across it it doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

PhaedraIsMyName · 14/06/2014 09:09

I have a reasonable sized flat with its own garden and also access to one of those uniquely Edinburgh locked private communal gardens but I'd still prefer a small flat with no garden over living out of town.

OOAOML · 14/06/2014 09:11

Fanjo sorry missed your posts -

by the "Edinburgh thing" I was using a shorthand that DH and I use in conversation (sorry had had a drink) because there are quite a few people here who just don't seem able to contemplate living elsewhere. It is a bone of contention with DH because where we live is one of those fairly fundamental decisi9ons.

Re Edinburgh people getting a slagging - I actually (again just my personal experience) find that people from different areas of Scotland tease/joke about people from other areas. Mainly good-natured, sometimes not.

I thought this thread last night was fascinating - there are so many differences of language etc, we are clearly in a very diverse country. I think we have more differences between us within Scotland than we do between Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Katie parts of Edinburgh are beautiful, I freely admit that. But the cost we pay for living in a two bedroom tenement flat with no garden is not, in my opinion, worth it. I think my family could have a much better quality of life outside the city but DH will not budge.

PhaedraIsMyName · 14/06/2014 09:13

Posting on the train to London at the moment.

Speaking of all things Scottish just how awful is that news programme with Sarah Smith which has replaced Newsnight Scotland?

scottishmummy · 14/06/2014 09:19

Haha I once overheard tourist enquire what time is the one o clock gun?

PhaedraIsMyName · 14/06/2014 09:19

OOAMOL husband of mine (originally from Clydebank) is definitely a couldn't now contemplate not living in Edinburgh man. I concede there's a lot of it.

You know the Guardian does it's where to live section at weekends? When it featured Bruntsfield it gave the downside as " the unbearable smugness of living in Bruntsfield" (I don't live in Bruntsfield but it applies to other areas)

awaynboilyurheid · 14/06/2014 09:23

Scottish here too, I am born raised and live in Glasgow, proud glaswegian, but I love edinburgh too! is that allowed?

scottishmummy · 14/06/2014 09:27

Love your username!i love embra too

awaynboilyurheid · 14/06/2014 09:29

I know but a friend told me in the Glaswegian book of rules no 1 paragraph 2 you never to admit it!

BookieTubules · 14/06/2014 09:36

English Londoner in an overpriced house just to even things up a bit.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/06/2014 09:42

OoAML it's fine :)

Just have been on a few threads where people from Edinburgh got a bit of a bashing.

We're not that bad really.

Bruntsfield is pretty nice, I wouldn't rush to leave it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/06/2014 09:43

Awayandboil it is more than allowed Grin

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/06/2014 09:44

Phaedra if you had my DD you might see the issue with living in small flat (severe ASD). :)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/06/2014 09:45

Small flat not so bad but oh for a garden with a trampoline.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/06/2014 09:45

For me to go on to relieve stress Grin

Mrsjayy · 14/06/2014 09:46

I know it was pages back but set phasers to malkie made me Grin had to watch the clip, just checking in

WildThong · 14/06/2014 10:00

What a nice, fuzzy warm thread Smile
I love the atmosphere in Edinburgh when I visit. The worst thing about living in the West of Scotland is the midgies!

FannyFifer · 14/06/2014 10:00

Phaedra that news programme is bloody awful.
It really is the most patronising guff, but generally you find that a Scottish version of a UK news programme is dumbed down for us thickos. Grin

FannyFifer · 14/06/2014 10:02

I LOVE sets phasers to Malky, makes me laugh every time. Grin
