to think nesquick whole grain cereal, fat free milk and no added sugar juice is relatively healthy for a fussy eater

Hi,

My 7 year old Ds is a very fussy eater, tried everything!

I would love it if he would eat kale with cottage cheese on rice cakes for breakfast but get real no child eats perfectly like that.

Today he had a normal sized bowl of whole grain nesquick cereal with skimmed milk.I know it has some sugar in it but its only about the same as a banana and to counter this he has a glass of sugar free orange squash. Both the cereal and juice have added vitamins. Does everyone else agree this is pretty healthy and realistic breakfast?

Thanks

Marie

tethers that's probably exactly what my DD is after! I'll suggest it in the morning. Grin

Ds is an incredibly fussy eater but will eat shreddies (which I think is like eating cardboard but I'm not complaining)

He generally has a bowl of shreddies (or coco pops as an occasional treat) with full fat yeo valley strawberry yoghurt or milk & a glass of pure juice. Sometimes he'll have a handful of grapes, strawberries or raspberries

Given the choice he'd drink Oasis with every meal but I tell him it's banned at breakfast & bedtime.

I agree that aspartame is not good for you. Ds used to be intolerant to it but seems to be able to drink small amounts now.

MrsWinnibago · 12/06/2014 20:58

Pictures why would you LET him though? Confused If you know how bad it is I mean?

Picturesinthefirelight · 12/06/2014 21:04

Well he is 10 years old now & I'm not always there to dictate.

Whilst he had the intolerance (diarrhoea, stomach cramps etc) I used to take our own drinks to birthday parties, school (they served sugar free juice in reception but thankfully changed their policy).

Most of the time we drink water, pure juice, milk & hit chocolate in our house but he loves Oasis so chooses to have it sometimes.

sunshine, I think as people have very strong views on these issues there is often no point in debating them. if people find what works for them stick with it. I just think the traditional British breakfast which was protein and fat was pretty good. There is nothing to stop anyone getting their carbs from veg - much better for you but we are nation 60% obese with massive diabetes dying off like nine pins because we mainline carbs morning noon and night. There is nothing I can write on this thread which will make people give their children eggs and tap water for breakfast however cheap and good for you they might be.

arethereanyleftatall · 12/06/2014 21:13

For me, porridge with cream and grated whole nuts is a good breakfast. Dd1 has that. Dd2, fussier, has a 'good' cereal, shreddies, but topped with a 'bad' cereal, normally Cheerios. That's our compromise.

JohnCusacksWife · 12/06/2014 21:23

Porridge with cream and nuts? Really???

vindscreenviper · 12/06/2014 21:23

Grated nuts?

Nah.

Picturesinthefirelight · 12/06/2014 21:24

Porridge with cream & nuts I would say is quite nutritious ;assuming it was made with milk but just a small spoon of cream mixed in.

My favourite breakfast is scrambled egg & bacon on toast/bagel but neither I'd my children will eat bacon or eggs.

FindoGask · 12/06/2014 21:27

porridge with cream and nuts sounds like the tits! Yes, quite high fat content but there's nothing wrong with that.

JohnCusacksWife · 12/06/2014 21:33

It sounds like an abomination to me and a waste of a good bowl of porridge. What the hell's wrong with a spot of milk? Smile

Picturesinthefirelight · 12/06/2014 21:33

Can't stand porridge myself but nuts are an excellent form if protein.

StealthPolarBear · 12/06/2014 21:35

lol at tethers

Also have to ask why crumpets, marmite ,honey are so superior to cereal? I am not sure this is the case."

For the same reason that jam sandwiches and jam on toast are always seem to be lauded on here I expect. Whereas ham sandwiches are frowned upon.

chocolatecrispies · 12/06/2014 21:37

Has anyone read Kids, Carrots and Candy? Really interesting read for anyone with a fussy eater, has transformed our home!

afterthought · 12/06/2014 21:39

I was equally as fussy as a child and have probably had coco pops almost every day for the last 25 years. I am very healthy and it's done me no harm!

StealthPolarBear · 12/06/2014 21:41

of course it would have to be a jam wrap as sliced bread is the FOOD OF THE DEVIL

bigkidsdidit · 12/06/2014 21:42

This thread has made me happy Grin

I LOVE cereal being 'shit in a box' Grin

And the aspartame panic on here. Meh. My two have toast and marmite and a glass of milk which has no more nutritional value than sugary cereal but i have seen suggested before in its place. So many double standards on here.

nilbyname · 12/06/2014 21:43

Crumpets or muesli or homemade granola.

Boxed cereals are full of empty calories, loads of salt and sugar.

Real foods, not processed are best. I'm pretty sure bacon isn't processed, I buy mine for the butchers.

Salami- full of salt, you got me.

Cheese- protein and essential fats for growing kids.

Eggs- can't argue with eggs.

Fruit- real natural sugar, not processed.

But stand by your crap food choices.

Type 2 diabetes on the rise? Lack of real foods in peoples diets I would say.

hazeyjane · 12/06/2014 21:43

I prefer frosted shit in a box.

ViviPru · 12/06/2014 21:43

Deary me. Only on Mumsnet. Hmm

PedantMarina · 12/06/2014 21:43

You gave your DC Nestle products?

cringes and swoons

StealthPolarBear · 12/06/2014 21:45

is cheese unprocessed these days?

arethereanyleftatall · 12/06/2014 21:46

Johncusack-yes, really. I'm actually quite smug, having thought that was a great breakfast for a 5 yr old. I'm a bit upset that you didn't agree! Yes, 100% oats, mixed with full fat organic milk, spoon of cream on top, then a grated Brazil nut.

hazeyjane · 12/06/2014 21:46

But stand by your crap food choices.

The op is about a very fussy eater. ^^ This is a bit harsh.

:o
I loved frosties as a child. Tony the Tiger was my first real crush. I had some a few years ago (can't remember why) and they are vile! And I've gone right off the furry stripes too.
