to think nesquick whole grain cereal, fat free milk and no added sugar juice is relatively healthy for a fussy eater

Hi,

My 7 year old Ds is a very fussy eater, tried everything!

I would love it if he would eat kale with cottage cheese on rice cakes for breakfast but get real no child eats perfectly like that.

Today he had a normal sized bowl of whole grain nesquick cereal with skimmed milk.I know it has some sugar in it but its only about the same as a banana and to counter this he has a glass of sugar free orange squash. Both the cereal and juice have added vitamins. Does everyone else agree this is pretty healthy and realistic breakfast?

Thanks

Marie

Retropear Weetabix minis contain a lot of sugar and aren't a very healthy option but ordinary, plain weetabix (or oatibix) contains only a little sugar and is fine. Ditto flavoured instant porridge versus ordinary plain porridge oats.

Retropear · 16/06/2014 20:55

So the shit is sugar,ah at least we're clear.

Well considering you're supposed to keep sugar intake to 10% of your calories intake and tweens eat what 1800 calories a day the 30 odd calories in the 8 grams of sugar in a portion of Weetabix minis during a restricted sugar day isn't something I'm going to worry about.

But you go ahead.

SoftSheen · 16/06/2014 21:04

I'm not worried, but it's not true to say that all boxed cereals are equal- they're all very different.

fatlazymummy · 16/06/2014 21:13

I remember having pop tarts in the 70's. They weren't all that, TBH.
We used to have cereal twice a day, once for brekkie and a bowl for supper , usually cornflakes or wheetabix. With at least one spoonful of sugar Smile. Somehow we managed not to be overweight though.

Mmm.....Shitty Crunch!

The difference between Weetabix and crispy minis is just choc dots and sugar content .In one portion it's what 6 g difference equalling 23 odd calories.Confused

RingleaderOfTheTormentors · 17/06/2014 23:31

Weetabix is just over 4% sugar (4.4 if I remember rightly)
so it's not full of shit.
Weetabix minis are full of shit, that's why they taste so deliciously better than weetabix. But I wouldn't give my kids abowl full of weetabix minis any more than i would give them nesquick.

Refined sugar contains calories and NOTHING ELSE .
There are no nutrients whatsoever in sugar. The body does not need sugar. It just makes shit taste good! :)

Here, here isitsnowingyet! This thread is all very precious! When we were kids we had the likes of Sugar Puffs/Frosties etc every day, plus the cream off the top of the milk. I'm perfectly healthy now, with a full set of teeth and no food hang ups. Love the idea of tongue in cheek mini cheese board etc!

LittleBearPad · 18/06/2014 00:09

Well Ringleader weetabix minis are 8.4% sugar so hardly full of shit. There's no need to be so precious.

mollysmummy1970 · 18/06/2014 00:17

This thread is hilarious! Grin

It's cereal. Not crack. Some people must live in a parallel universe to me.

Bogeyface · 18/06/2014 09:10

This threads is hilarious.

Who in the real has got time to be frigging about with selections of meats and cheeses and fruit salad when you have lunches to make, hair to brush, teeth cleaning to supervise, school runs to do?!

If I tried that then we wouldnt get to school until lunchtime! And yes I suppose I could be more organised and make this delightful buffet breakfast the night before, but that would stop the kids arsing about the following morning. Nope. Bowl of Aldi shreddies or toast if we have run out of milk (again). Job done.

Bogeyface · 18/06/2014 09:10

Oh and sometimes we have....... Weetos! Please dont report me!!!

Bogeyface · 18/06/2014 09:11

Sorry that should be "Who in real life" and wouldnt not would....really must proofread!

JaneParker · 18/06/2014 09:26

Takes about 2 minutes to cook omlets though, doesn't it? You don't think about a protein breakfast any more than a carbs and sugar one.

UsedtobeFeckless · 18/06/2014 09:40

This thread has exceeded my wildest dreams - thanks to everyone involved. Wink

a 2 minute omlette would taste vile, it takes longer to make something edible and with 3 school agers and a toddler, no I really dont have time to do that, or boil eggs or whatever.

Good for you if you do, but I dont. It may be tiresome but I suggest you live my life before judging it.

Retropear · 18/06/2014 13:13

Today I did porridge, frozen raspberries and honey(which dd left).

Same sugar content same as said notorious Weetabix minis which they had yesterday followed by lunch(egg roll, pot of mixed veg,pot of watermelon, juice water and yog),buttered crackers at play time and tea (homity pie and peas, cherries).

Fine by me.I can live with the 6g(30 odd calorie)difference in sugar between joyless Weetabix and Weetabix minis when dd goes to school with a full stomach.Their sugar intake is well within the 10% of their diet it's supposed to be.

ToysRLuv · 18/06/2014 13:15

Ds likes porridge with honey. Or should I say honey with a bit of porridge Grin . No fruit can ever come near his porridge, though. That would totally spoil it.

LadyNexus · 18/06/2014 13:16

I'd skip anything with 'sugar free' on.

A bit of sugar is better than all the chemicals they pump in the sugar free stuff.

Is there a weight issue with ds? I think normal/ semi skimmed milk would be fine for a 7 year old.

RingleaderOfTheTormentors · 18/06/2014 13:36

PRECIOUS, littlebearpad ??? You couldn't be more wrong! Grin

...oh, no, actually, you COULD be more wrong! A quick google shows that Weetabix minis are 23.3% sugar

You REALLY ought to check your facts before you get all pious on tinternet, makes you look a bit of a fool Grin

Hahaha!

Retropear · 18/06/2014 13:45

From Weetabix site

21g per 100g

8.4g per 40g serving,my 3 have a handful,no idea of weight probably under 40g

Sooo not enough sugar to waste any sleep over, all 3 well within desired sugar limits. Not seeing the need for hysteria.

Smile
