Can I just say I have nothing against them as a whole
But one has started coming around our estate every night between 9pm and 9.30pm and every night it's wakes up 10 month old DS
The chime is so loud and goes on for ages. My husband timed that the van was chiming for half an hour on our estate tonight (not all together 30 second bursts.
I really don't want to be petty but DS is then unsettled all night. Also I miss sleep I have seizures due to epilepsy an I had to have the day off work today. I only went back to work three weeks ago.
Also realise parents of babies have a lack of sleep but knowing what triggers my epilepsy we worked so hard to get DS into a routine while I was on Maternity leave and it seemed to have worked. Until now.
I have looked and after 7pm they are not allowed to sound the chimes by law
Who wants sodding ice cream at that time anyway

Well I'm amazed

I did not know that about ice cream vans Shock

And I live in a dodgy as fuck area

Redglitter · 11/06/2014 22:10

My cousin has a share in an ice cream van and they do a roaring trade at night in chocolate, fizzy drinks, cigarettes AND ice cream. They do well with adult customers. All legit and above board!!

AtYourCervix · 11/06/2014 22:11

Good lord! Really?

How do you know this stuff?

Realitybitesyourbum · 11/06/2014 22:11

What do you ask for when you go up to the window then ?! An 88?! i really want to try this!

heraldgerald · 11/06/2014 22:11

Mrd Winnebago that made me laugh out loud...

But really, seriously?! And this is common knowledge??

ExitPursuedByABear · 11/06/2014 22:14

I didn't know ice cream vans sold cigs.

APlaceInTheWinter · 11/06/2014 22:15

An 88
I can just imagine lots of ice cream vans getting requests for 88's!

MoominAndMiniMoom · 11/06/2014 22:15

We have solitary fireworks here too Grin it's quite funny, every time we hear a single firework we just say 'drugs'. It's hardly the most subtle way of announcing you're stocked up.

Koothrapanties · 11/06/2014 22:17

Solitary fireworks round here too!

SueDNim · 11/06/2014 22:18

I am normally incredibly naive, but even I know that some ice cream vans sell "other" stuff.

BoffinMum · 11/06/2014 22:19

They put drugs in the cones at that time of night. On request.

MiniSoksMakeHardWork · 11/06/2014 22:21

It is 7pm. I found the best way to resolve my issue with a local driver was to rage at him at 9:30 one night - yes 9:30 after several equally late night trips. When I'd got tiny babies who were not sleeping well and two older dc (then 2 and 4) who had finally settled to sleep. Bloody icecream van woke them up again. I also pointed out he had lights out on his van and driving around at night he may easily hit one of the children he allegedly wanted to sell icecream to.

I'd researched the problem and learned that they are not allowed to play their chimes for any longer than 12 seconds, and then no less than 2mins apart.

Whilst i was hugely unreasonable and may have been majorly sleep deprived, I got a round of applause from my neighbours.

I also rang the local council to ask what I needed to do, reported his license plate to them as they issue permits to trade or something like. We didn't see him again.

We've another one who has made the odd late appearance in recent weeks. I'm waiting until I'm not busy with children before I can politely point out the error of his ways.

VitoCorleone · 11/06/2014 22:22

I'm actually amazed that some people are notified by a firework, never heard that before in my life

MiniSoksMakeHardWork · 11/06/2014 22:23

I also didn't know they sold other items. My innocence has been sullied by mn.

WorraLiberty · 11/06/2014 22:23

I thought everyone knew about ice cream vans selling drugs?

That song 'Weekend' by the group Scooter, came out in the 90's (I think) and the lyrics were "Respect to the man in the ice cream van".

WorraLiberty · 11/06/2014 22:25

And I hear the fireworks too (probably the same ones 70's hears)

Although considering it's common knowledge that when a dealer picks up they set one off, I don't see how the Police don't just go straight to them too?

MrsWinnibago · 11/06/2014 22:25

How do people know which vans are the dodgy ones? Do they speak in some sort of code? Or are they more obvious about it?

"I'll have a screwball, two funny feet and a bag of crack please."

TurnOverTheTv · 11/06/2014 22:28

My ice cream man used to rent videos, sell fags at 10 pence for one, in a 10p mix up bag. And depending how well you knew him, quarter bottles of vodka.

carlywurly · 11/06/2014 22:30

I've lived all over the uk and was totally unaware that this happened Confused
I now live in cornwall and will view the numerous ice cream vans round here with a new suspicion.

Caitlin177 · 11/06/2014 22:30

I thought everyone knew about ice cream vans selling drugs?

Hmm

I guess there is nothing you have not heard of

Videos and vodka - that sounds like the perfect ice cream van!

Chippednailvarnish · 11/06/2014 22:32

Slightly off subject but I've told the Dc's that if the ice cream van plays music it means they've run out of ice cream.

minniebar · 11/06/2014 22:33

I'm sure it was a plot line in A Touch of Frost once.

A few years back I overheard my parents discussing their old milkman as 'You know, the one who used to sell the porn videos as well' Shock Hmm [ewwww]

WorraLiberty · 11/06/2014 22:34

Chipped you'd better keep them away from the windows then Grin
