Dishwasher / washing machine / tumble dryer on in the evenings

Hi all

In the evenings, after the kids are in bed, I like to run the dishwasher / tumble dryer / washing machine. That way I can scoop up all the clothes etc as part of the end of day tidying up. Also, it makes me feel like all the jobs are done and I can have a rest.

DH gets irritated because he doesn't like them on when he is relaxing in the evening. I think this is unreasonable - the washing machine / tumble dryer are in a separate utility room and the dishwasher is really quiet.

AIBU? Sorry I know it's petty.

well i dont mind it being on in the evening... but HE does. thats your problem

BikeRunSki · 11/06/2014 18:05

Yes. Because we are all at school or work during the day.

TarkaTheOtter · 11/06/2014 18:06

I can see why it annoys him if he can hear them. Having said that if you can't reach an agreement I think the person actually doing the laundry shoul get to decide.

eurochick · 11/06/2014 18:06

Our living area is open plan with the kitchen so the dishwasher only goes on overnight or when we are out (I know, I know, but it's a risk I am happy with). The washing machine is in a separate room so that goes on in the evening - it's the only time we are in (both work full time).

Are you there during the day to do any of these things or is the evening the only time?

Bananapickle · 11/06/2014 18:08

If it's the only practical time they can go on then there is little choice. You could always ask him to sort it all if he has that much of an issue with it!!

Jinty64 · 11/06/2014 18:09

Well, it depends. Are you out all day or are you at home so that you could put them on when you get up and deal with them throughout the day. Communication is the way forward here. You have to discuss the best way to do it.

CruCru · 11/06/2014 18:11

I am around in the day but to be honest, the washing machine etc are often on in the day as well (very messy DS and a baby DD). Also we often go away for the weekend so it is a bit of a rush to get it done when we get back.

Yanbu. Our dishwasher is usually rumbling away in the evenings. Sometimes the washing machine too.

I agree that it makes you feel like all jobs are done for the day and the rumbling of the dishwasher = time to sit down!

IShallCallYouSquishy · 11/06/2014 18:12

Until DH gets home from work tonight to plumb in our new machine, I've not been able to do any washing. I have a toddler and a baby. I have about 10 loads worth to do so it will be running around the clock until it's all done starting at about 8pm tonight!

IShallCallYouSquishy · 11/06/2014 18:13

...any washing for just over a week

WooWooOwl · 11/06/2014 18:13

I agree it depends on whether you are in or out most of the day.

If you're out at work, then your DH is being incredibly unreasonable and should be told to do his own washing/dishes etc in future? If you're at home and have ample opportunity to do these things during the day, then it seems mean not to.

Frontier · 11/06/2014 18:13

I tend to agree with him (although we don't have a utility room so the noise is very much with us). However, as I've decided Im no longer prepared to risk running them when we're out or in bed, there's not really much choice and needs must.

cardibach · 11/06/2014 19:08

I can see both sides. As usual, though, I am surprised by how often MNers need to put ona load of washing. DD and I make 2 and a half loads a week, including towels (obviously done 2 one week, 3 the next) plus bedding (which I am lax about). How can a week for 2 adults and 2 very small people make 10 loads? Surely your washing machine isn't on every night? Couldn't you save stuff for during the next day?

Dishwasher is a bit more reasonable - but if you use the quick wash it'll only be about 30 mins.

cardibach · 11/06/2014 19:08

Oh, and I don't have a tumble dryer, so that never needs to go on.

CoffeeTea103 · 11/06/2014 19:12

I can see your DH point of view as in the evenings I also find the noise a bit unsettling. As you are at home during the day, can you not run it then, you times will just be From maybe midday to midday the next day instead of end of day?

Bogeyface · 11/06/2014 19:13

Why does he need to do it?! It is sooooo easy to plumb in a washer, I have done several and I couldnt believe how easy it was the first time!

We do an average of 3 loads a day (big family) if it didnt go on in the evenings it wouldnt all get done. If it bothers him that much then he either needs to hire a laundry maid, buy a house with a totally seperate laundry outhouse, do it himself or get over it.

Minty82 · 11/06/2014 19:30

cardibach we're two adults, one toddler and a baby here too, and I honestly don't know how we could run the washing machine anything less than once a day! That includes towels but sheets are extra...

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 11/06/2014 19:34

We're all out in the day here, so the evening is the only time the machines can go on. I usually stick a load on as soon as I get in and if there's a basket full or another load then I will put that on after.

With the nice weather I'm trying to do the load on an evening so I can hang it out and then go to work.

The dishwasher goes on after breakfast as usually enough room for the dishes and then I go to work.

hugoagogo · 11/06/2014 19:36

He is being ridiculous.

This reminds me of my dm not letting me wash my clothes when I went home for christmas.

WitchWay · 11/06/2014 19:55

My DH doesn't like the dishwasher on in the evenings if we are still sitting in the kitchen after dinner. He hates the actually pretty quiet noise it makes. I usually go to bed first & he puts it on when he's finished in there.
