To complain to BT?

DM and I were on our way to the shop earlier this afternoon. As we were leaving our estate, a BT Openreach worker stopped his van next to his colleagues working on a different property (who we were walking past at the time), and said, loudly "I've just realised that's that fucking shit estate back there."

I was really, offended, as was DM. I have lived in that "shit estate" my entire life and my mum has lived there over 30 years. My mum, my neighbours, and I, have professional jobs. I have never been burgled, never had any issues with my neighbours, and the children who play outside are pleasant (albeit loud and sometimes annoying!)

I'm sick of people making assumptions about where I live, just because it's an estate. AIBU to make a complaint?

YWNBU but it would be a waste of time. BT will not be able to id the worker, and he can just deny it.

Better to challenge his there and then.

Don't get worked up by ignorant opinions, life is too too short :)

Good point, Paq. This is one of those moments where I am kicking myself for not reacting faster! Angry.

YANBU but YABM (you are being mad) to try to complain to BT by phone. You will spend hours on hold, listening to musac that drives you potty, go in circles pressing one for this and two for that, then someone will take your details and promise to sort it out and never get back to you.

If it makes you feel better a local engineer informed me our estate was shit. But he was referring to the cabling and junction boxes.

roofio87 · 11/06/2014 16:42

That was very rude, and you could try to complain, but like it has been said they would deny it I'm sure. All their vans are tracked though so they would know which two workers were there. However, I would just let it go, who cares what he thinks!!

Complain. Mind you you get no where I walked past the gas van to see one of them smoking and there was a strong smell of gas. I was so worried I popped over to ask them re lighting a match and they looked at me like I was an alien and didn't even bother stopping their conversation to talk to me. I phoned British gas when I returned home and again they didn't seem worried. Luckily there was no problem...

Very true. It's probably not worth my energy!

London what an arsehole! These companies really don't give two shits, do they?

I don't think I'd call BT unless I was feeling very masochistic, but what about a tweet or Facebook grump?

CatThiefKeith · 11/06/2014 17:25

Dh is a telecoms engineer. If he refers to somewhere being shit it is generally, as HoneyDragon says, because the network in that area is old/copper/neglected and not a reflection on the actual area at all.

EasyWhiteChocolate · 11/06/2014 17:30

Goring I'm not on FB or Twitter, an AIBU and complaint are my only options for rants! I think I'll rethink the complain though. I was feeling very White Chicks ("I'm about to have a B-F!")

Cat I somehow missed HoneyDragon's post. That's fair enough then. Perhaps I was being over-touchy! He should think about his choice of words more carefully though, especially as he's a shouter.

Longtallsally2 - I know exactly what you mean! BT still think I have moved house - from this address to this address!!! My last attempt to sort out an e-mail problem took over an hour - and I just gave up in the end but I know I'll have to take a deep breath and try again.
