asking teacher to move dd up a level

This may be better in books but hoping for traffic. My dd is 5 in primary 1 in Scottish school is getting home stage 5 Oxford reading tree books and is finding them really easy to read and also discuss the content. I have put note in diary to this effect but still getting stage 5 home. She has a bedtime story every night loves winnie the witch, Blue Kangaroo, Julia Donaldson, Funny bones series and can manage large parts of these independently. She is not interested yet in Chapter books with no pictures but is scouring her book shelves every night to choose stories to read.
Would you ask the teacher to move her up also any suggestions for other books for her to read as she is taking real joy in showing off her reading and want to encourage her love for it.
Many thanks

You can certainly ask, but interest does not equal capability - perhaps she memorises the story so can read them to you by the time she gets home? Perhaps take her to the local library and borrow some books so you can assess her reading yourself, then make an appointment to see the teacher.

Thanks sybil she is definitely not memorising she can pick up unseen texts or books from her collection and read the majority of them it just seems to have clicked for her in the past few weeks but she is getting through our collection very quickly was hoping for some ideas of other books to get for her.

It seems an odd time to ask the teacher to move her up. Does your term not finish next week?
There's a great thread on here (I think it's in Primary Education) with lots of book recommendations for that age group. It might be worth a search.

If she is in a Scottish school there is no point asking to have her moved up a level when there is only 2 weeks left of the term surely?!?

Groovee · 11/06/2014 13:56

Sometimes moving up too fast can cause confidence issues. My dd was bored with ORT and I spoke to the teacher with her present and our agreement was to read the ORT books and then I would read the magic far away tree with her at home. It worked a treat and she loves reading as I gave her the challenges at home. I would encourage her reading at home in the same way as your are and take her to the library and the book shop and spend time there. At this point in the Scottish School year it's probably not the best time to get her moving and see what happens after the summer.

You can get her new or library books at home. My dd was an exceptional reader and was always far behind in reading scheme than her actual ability.

I would occasionally write a note in book to say dd has shown an interest in moving up what do you think type of thing. But mostly only stemmed from dd herself asking me or mentioning her books were easy or boring, and in which case I would encourage her to talk to teacher her self.

Generally though I never got worked up about reading scheme and when dd was a free reader she chose rubbish books anyway. Best to just do what you can at home.

This thread has lots of suggestions for 5-year-olds

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/primary/a1493778-Please-suggest-some-good-books-for-a-5-year-old

but I second Layla there's no point asking for your dd to be moved up at this stage in the school year. She might not even have the same teacher next year and even if she does their approach to reading in Primary 2 may be different.

survivingsummer · 11/06/2014 14:00

I would hang fire, carry on doing what you are doing and foster her love of reading over the summer and see what happens next term! My DD went up 4 reading bands over the summer holiday one year so chances are they will do similar with your DD.

Echo others about trying the Primary Education and Children's Books forums for threads about books to read with her Smile

Buy a set of the early reader Horrid Henry books and read those at home with her. She'll be in a new class next year and they'll resort the sets then. I think it would be odd to move her now.

Perfect thanks everyone end of term has sprung up on me hadn't even thought of that loads on in school next 2 weeks so think they are probably already slowing down the kids workload. Just signed up to reading chest so she will have loads to choose from over the hols.
