To think that if you followed all the food 'health' fads, you'd never eat anything?

Recent things I've heard/read:
Fruit has too much sugar and is bad for your teeth.
Carbs make you fat.
High fat content makes you fat.
Meat is full of antibiotics etc and you can't be sure where it's come from (like in the horsemeat scandal!)
Potatoes are dodgy because if they have any green on them they have begun to secrete a poisonous chemical.
Rice contains arsenic.
Oily fish contain pollutants and some fish contain high levels of mercury.
Vegetables are sprayed with chemicals.
etc
etc

Some of the above are true, some I'd question. Most are only an issue if you eat a large amount of that thing. All things in moderation is my motto - otherwise you'd starve!

Yep, add to that the fact that it all seems to change every week. One week potatoes are the devils food, the next week they are good for you etc. I try to just make sure I eat a good variety of food, and ignore all the fads. A lot of any one type of food is bad for you!

Yanbu.

You would have to eAt ridiculous amounts of most things for anything to have a dangerous effect and tbh andif you eat too much of anything even safe foods, you'd be ill as diet wouldn't be balanced.

YANBU. Personally l like the healthy eating philosophy contained within Michael Pollan's lovely book 'In Defence of Food'. One easily remembered sentence.

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants"

He goes on to define what 'food' is, as opposed to the many 'edible food-like substances' that get passed off as food these days. Very simple.

yanbu but the diet industry has to constantly make up new diets to bring the money in.

AMumInScotland · 11/06/2014 12:01

YANBU. If you stuff your face with one thing and don't have a balanced diet, then your health and weight will almost certainly be affected.

In general, if you can tell where it came from, it's fine in moderation.

If you can't tell what it actually is - like half the listed ingredients on some packs - then it shouldn't be a major part of your diet.
