To sack the cleaner after coming home and crying my eyes out

I had a cleaner for 6 months when I was pregnant as I had hyperemesis, severe PGP and a 2 year old. She was fantastic! We have a modest 3 bed semi and she used to get it all cleaned and a basket of ironing done in 3 hours. I paid her £10 an hour. She worked for herself and had insurance, references, CRB etc.

3 weeks ago her father became very ill and needed full time care so she had to give up work. Since then I have been looking for someone else as I am struggling to the point of depression with a refluxy newborn. Just surviving the day is an achievement for me let alone doing the housework.

I have found it hard to find anyone. Everyone I found who was self employed had no insurance and no references. To be honest, some came across as quite dodgy. So then I thought I would go through an agency. It is a national one so seemed good. They found someone for me and she came today. I decided to have 3 hours clean and 1 hour iron as I know my last cleaner was superwoman and I didn't want it to be unmanageable. Also, as it was her 1st time here I didn't leave any ironing to be done as it's always slower when you don't know the house and we did have 3 weeks of dirt.

We don't have pets and mainly have laminate floor so it doesn't get too dirty apart from the usual mess with 2 kids. I'm also not a clean freak, as long as it's done reasonably well then I'm happy.

Well! I just walked through the door after a long day at the hospital with the newborn trying to get his medication sorted out and I honestly thought we had been burgled!

The dining room table was crooked with all the seats pushed back, the coffee table was at a 90 degree angle to where it usually is , a highchair is blocking a doorway, 2 kitchen cupboards are wide open, the Hoover is half pushed back in the cleaning cupboard so the door won't shut and she's left a note saying she's broken a vase (wedding gift) and that she didn't have time to do any bedrooms! As I walked around in shock I slipped on a duster she had left in the middle of the floor and fell over with the baby in my arms. I couldn't save myself, only him, so have now got 2 very painful knees.

My husband has just got home and I've cried!

I don't want her to come again but I feel bad about sacking her. She only gets £27 for 4 hours, the agency gets the rest - it doesn't seem enough really. Maybe I am deluded as to how much can be done in 4 hours and our last cleaner was a one off.

Am I?

You're not unreasonable. If you want to get it off your chest, have a talk with her and explain her the reasons why you are sacking her. It may help her amend her ways and be better at her job. But she definitely has to go.

I need to know OP

  • Did you sack the cleaner?
  • Did the agency sort your vase out?
  • How are you now, hope your PND is better and you are feeling more positive?

Read the whole thread and am (selfishly) looking for closure haha.

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2016 08:20

Well done for reading the whole thread Olivia. You seem to be in the minority. Grin

I have uni assignments due in, and im an expert at finding things to waste time on lol.

Though am rooting for the OP now - and have learnt a lesson about watching dates on threads, and cleaners lol.

DanglyEarOrnaments · 10/02/2016 08:46

I bet OP invited the cleaner to lunch and ended up her best friend. They are too busy shopping having wine to update us.

plus OP is probably completely unaware this thread is ALIVE and coming after her

CheesyWeez · 10/02/2016 08:51

I read the whole thread too. I find cleaning ones interesting! The points are still relevant. Like Mooey I had a cleaner who took a fixed price (of £40, which was probably too much now I've read this thread) and she would get everything done. She would come with 1 or 2 helpers and all the equipment/products. On the days there were 3 of them it would take 40 minutes. Very organized! That suited me fine. It was a great business model too.

Mouseinahole · 10/02/2016 08:56

I'm in Shropshire too. My next door neighbour is a cleaner for local banks and for the church. When I had cancer treatment she offered to clean for me for nothing but of course I insisted on paying. We have continued the arrangement for 9 years now. I pay £10 an hour she does 2 hours a week and completely cleans our 3 bed bungalow (no ironing). She does a grand job. You should definitely sack the agency and ask around for a private recommendation.

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2016 09:11

I would love to know why Ldnmum2015 needed to reanimate it. Confused

Verbena37 · 10/02/2016 09:49

Defo get rid.
Also, could you call the lady you used to have and ask her if she can recommend anyone like her? She will like being asked for a recommendation and you know she is really good at the job and hopefully a cleaner friend she knows might be similar.

Verbena37 · 10/02/2016 09:50

Or, you could advertise for a mother's help who could come to the house and give you a little break from the baby whilst you whizz over the loo and floors once you're feeling more up to it?

sleeponeday · 10/02/2016 18:32

There's actually an obscure indie film, Fido, about having zombies as domestic staff.

ExasperatedAlmostAlways · 10/02/2016 18:37

I could easily clean a three bed in three hours and do a basket of ironing in an hour as long as it wasn't humongous. Its pretty bad she's not even tidied up after herself with regards to putting things back as found.

I'd defo get rid of her.

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2016 18:39

Zombies sound like the way to go sleep. Grin

DanglyEarOrnaments · 10/02/2016 18:58

Is it 2016 again yet? Confused

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2016 19:00

Nope it's still June 2014. I will be celebrating DSs 15th birthday again at this rate. Grin

DanglyEarOrnaments · 10/02/2016 19:12

Oh dear - but I have things to be getting on with in 2016, plus I wasn't crazy about 2015, I'm not doing that one again!

I think I'll just hang out on this thread in 2014 for a bit! Grin

PegsPigs · 10/02/2016 19:24

3 bed semi 2 hours £9/hr plus however long the ironing takes usually an hour or less.

PegsPigs · 10/02/2016 19:25

Aaargh I hate zombies
