So I got a pay raise last month. I spent 7 months running the department alone when my colleague left. I was promised said raise as a thanks for the ridiculous hours and the workload over those 7 months. A whole 1.2%. Which after tax means I get €22 extra a month. I felt like it was a slap in the face. I seethed a bit but just got on with it but today an invoice passed my desk for an executive lunch with a bill of €5800. FOR A LUNCH. AIBU to be so fucking annoyed that if they can spend 6k on a lunch, surely they can afford to give better pay raises?

Another one saying the most likely way to a pay rise is by getting another job. Employers will only pay you the minimum they can get away with (voice of bitter experience)

I think you should ask for a meeting and ask for more. Calmly citing all the additional work you've done and value you've provided to them, improving processes, reducing costs or whatever you have added to the role?

I don't agree with others you ask first, I think you should rise up to the job you want and prove yourself and then ask for more money.

This approach has worked for me. I have never been turned down for a pay rose when asking for more, with supporting justification. But I maybe in a different sector to you?

YANBU to want a better pay rise.

But the expensed lunch is irrelevant.

If you can get a job offer from another company, you will be in a stronger negotiating position. So you can say, I want to stay but X is offering me £Y to move. Can you better the offer?

I'd advise against using another company's job offer as a way of improving your current one.

The best way to negotiate a pay rise is to detail your ability to do the role, extra responsibilities you've taken on and additional revenue/savings you've brought to the company.
