I promised my sister we would quit together.

I don't even normally smoke as often as 1 every hour, it's just because I know I can't have one Sad

AIBU to ask one of you to come and gaffa tape me to the chair so I can't nip to the shop?

Or I could just go and buy just one more packet? She'd never know.

I smoked for 20 years and pretty much smoked 20 a day. Nothing really helped me giving up until I went to Alan Carr.

Now fag free since Oct 9th 2013. But not much richer weirdly!!

D0oinMeCleanin · 10/06/2014 12:24

I read the first few chapters, many moons ago. I'll have to dig it back out again.

Don't give in! I used to smoke 20 a day, went cold turkey and quit altogether and it was hard, there was cravings all the time for about 3 months and I did give in and have a sneaky fag, but persevered and now call myself a non smoker. If your seriously craving, try to distract yourself to take your mind of it.

ICanSeeTheSun · 10/06/2014 14:12

Do you want to give up.

NatalieMc82 · 10/06/2014 14:23

I'll be a year off the ciggies next week. You have to really believe you can do it, I'd tried soo many times before and stopped with each pregnancy but always took it back up again, but this time I just knew it was different. Try distracting yourself, my kitchen has never been so clean as it was the first week I quit!!
Very best of lick OP.

*luck

Jinty64 · 10/06/2014 14:45

Make a list of the things you need to buy for your new house. Plan which one you will buy at the end of the week/month. Then you can ross it off. Check online to see where you can get the best deal for the things you want or you could have a look in the charity shops. By then the children will be home.

All your nice new things will not get smelly because you are a non smoker.

Jayne35 · 10/06/2014 14:55

Good luck, it is difficult I know. I'm on day 10 today, I do have an 11mg ecig but haven't wanted that even the last two days (I think it's because I rolled my own as some-one said earlier and it's so big!).

This is my third attempt at quitting after 27 years, used to smoke 20 cigarettes a day then switched to tobacco 8-15 a day a few years ago.

I have some friends who stopped some years ago, it can be done. Maybe focus on why think you should give up. I have just felt more and more antisocial recently for being a vile and stinky smoker.

EverythingsDozy · 10/06/2014 14:56

Don't have much advice because I am a non-smoker and have never even so much as tried a puff.
Am just here to give you a bit of encouragement! Yay whooooooo go you! I love it when people try and give up because I really don't like smoking! Just think, it's so much better for your health, your wallet, your kids and other people! You'll smell better and feel better. It only takes 20 minutes for the effects of smoking to decrease (your bp and heart rate return to normal) only 12 hours for your oxygen levels to increase to normal and carbon monoxide to decrease to normal!
Also, my mums husband gets his liquid online and gets this one called jalopi (not sure on spelling) bears. It smells lovely, like jelly beans Grin

D0oinMeCleanin · 10/06/2014 15:02

I caved. I've had one. I'm having another before I collect the kids up, but then no-more until they're in bed or dd2 will shout at me Hmm

I think I'm still doing well. This next one will be my fourth including the two I had this morning before 10am, so as long as I don't have more than 5 more, which I won't I'm still on less than 10, so am still heading in the right direction at least.

Have bought a veg steamer and glasses for house, plus a new mop. Mine disintegrated last night. I have come to the conclusion that I might use too much bleach Blush I'd only had that mop a month.

Am going back tomorrow to get the kids curtains. If I spend my money and have none left for fags then I'll have to quit Grin (we have food)

I have a five a day limit, aiming to cut back just one a day over the next few weeks.

So next week, I will aim for just four a day.

Thurlow · 10/06/2014 15:22

You are doing well, you're doing really well. 30 down to 10? Fantastic. And you've just gone until mid-afternoon before having your first one!

One step at a time. As long as you try not to have more than you had the day before, you will get there.

squoosh · 10/06/2014 15:25

Real the Alan Carr and there won't be any cutting down or any angst, you'll just suddenly be a non smoker. It's magic!

squoosh · 10/06/2014 15:26

The problem with cutting down is that it doesn't reduce your mental craving, if anything it worsens it as you're counting down the hours till you can have your next fag.

NatalieMc82 · 10/06/2014 17:13

Agree with squoosh, the week before I quit when I was only on 5 a day was worse than the week I quit for good because it was all I could think about. I also got free patches and support from my local pharmacy, sometimes there's a waiting list but it is fantastic if it's available where you are. My dd was very anti-smoking also, and she was really pleased when I quit, for her to be proud of me (and I'm sure you'll feel the same) was worth more than any smoke..

jellybeans · 10/06/2014 17:16

Nicotine gum helped me. Also printing off a horrible picture and picturing it every time I wanted a cig and thinking of my kids if i got lung cancer etc etc.

ICanSeeTheSun · 10/06/2014 19:00

Giving up smoking is hard, on day 3 and I'm really struggling that's with patches and spray.

What is keeping me going is Monday where I go to stop smoking wales. They have a meter that proves if you have been smoking so I know I can't cheat.

I also have an advisor so I know I can chat to him.

Also MN has a stop smoking fourm.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 10/06/2014 19:16

Yes Allen Carr works for lots of people. It worked for me once but I relapsed after a couple of months. I don't think it's compatible with vaping though. It works by convincing you that you are getting completely nothing from smoking, while nothing says 'I love my nicotine' quite like a vapouriser does Grin

I don't think there is one single method that works for everyone, you just have to keep trying different things until something sticks. One important message from the recent Robert West research was that people tend to be more successful if they have support, such as an NHS group, regardless of whether they are using NRT. It would be well worth seeing what's available in your area. They are slowly becoming less hostile to ecig users Smile I think MN can fill that role too, to an extent (although probably not as much as having a regular appointment to keep). We have a stop smoking topic now, come and whinge to your heart's content!
