to think I'm not the only person who's happy to bathe rather than shower?

I'm considering renting out the spare room to help with the bills.

My friend reckons that it will be totally impossible to rent the room because we only have a (newly fitted, nice) bath with a rubbish shower attachment, not a proper shower. I recognise that many people prefer showers, and that if we had one, it would mean more people would be interested in the room, but I can't be the only one who prefers baths surely? Not to the point of making the room unrentable anyway? I don't need loads of people to rent it, only one!

He also reckons no one wants to live with a family. But we've rented rooms to students many, many times in the past (in old house with shower) He's talking mince, isn't he?

AIBU to expect a spare room in a family house with no shower to be perfectly rentable to a lodger (probably a student)?

If I was absolutely desperate I'd take it, but it would be a major off-putting factor for me, I only have a bath about once a year and would hate to be deprived of my daily shower. I don't need anything fancy, mixer shower from the bath taps plus shower curtain would do so long as it is attached to the wall. Not one of those detachable rubber hose ones though, I would draw the line at that.

It's not expensive to put a wall mounted shower over the bath and then everyone is happy. Just do that and you'll demonstrate you're a thoughtful landlady.

Baths are faffs IMHO.

Never shower. We don't have one and I never had on when I was growing up. Standing in a shower is no where near as pleasant an experience as a bath.

Fideliney · 07/06/2014 18:52

Is it? Confused

I work so I need a shower is a fucking stupid assertion either way.

lljkk · 07/06/2014 18:53

I had same thoughts as Fideliney. Besides, some SAHPs or even unemployed/retired are just as particular about showers in the morning before leaving the house which they might need to do just as early. I know the people posting were just working out their logic, but it did sound at best irrelevant and at worst prejudicial.

lljkk · 07/06/2014 18:54

ps: I hate showers, I wouldn't remember to notice when viewing, but in long run I'd want to move out if only showers were available. So I think OP will never get a set up that pleases everybody.

Fideliney · 07/06/2014 18:55

I'm quite sure there is hope of OP finding a bathing employed tenant who is both clean and has money with which to pay the rent.

Fideliney · 07/06/2014 19:07

Sorry. That's the third time eccentric use of the word 'need' has given me red mist this week. (Friend very ill. Stepping away from the keyboard now.)

McFox · 07/06/2014 19:18

I wouldn't rent somewhere without a shower, it's way too much hassle. I lived with an ex in his place for a few months and there was no shower - I hated it. You'd have to have an outstanding room/price for many people to consider it.

GrannyOnTheSchoolRun · 07/06/2014 20:30

Fideliney - there must be loads of people who read that comment as it was intended and realised the poster was saying she didn't have time to take a bath in the morning because she worked, that she needed a shower because its quicker.

Its amazing what some people here will get there knickers in a twist about.

wigglylines · 07/06/2014 20:32

This exact shower attachment. It's got rubbish water pressure, OK to rinse hair with just about, but not wall mounted, there's no point it'd be a disappointment!

And this exact bath model in case anyone's feeling like they need the full picture Grin (but not actually that bathroom, that's off the company website!)

Just saw that bath is now cheaper than when we bought it "on sale" Angry

Anyway, back to the AIBU, I wasn't really asking if there are people out there who wouldn't rent a room without a shower, I know there are loads of you out there! I was asking if I was being U to think I could rent it at all.

If I had the money I'd put in a shower for our own benefit, let alone a lodger's. But I don't atm, it's simply not an option.

As to where you can rent a room to a student without safety certs and being a family, well we've rented rooms to 11 lodgers since becoming a family so I'd say you can!

(The number is so high not because they left because they hated it btw! We rented two rooms at once, and as they were a mostly mature final year students or summer students they only needed the rooms for limited periods.)

Oh I love a bath, bubbles, candles, door closed to the outside world. Just bliss. And as far as I was aware - when DH was a student im not convinced washing was a regular occurrence anyway.

GrannyOnTheSchoolRun · 07/06/2014 21:02

I thought you were referring to something like this.

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-x-White-Plastic-Shower-Hose-Tap-Attachment-/271194563757

And what you have posted a picture of is nice but I still would prefer a stand alone shower because there's just not a lot of room in those P shaped ones.

mousmous · 07/06/2014 21:10

I think yabu.
I wouldn't rent it. I hate baths esp when on my period, I just never feel clean.

mousmous · 07/06/2014 21:12

but tbh, shower over bath is fine, that's what we have as there is no space for an extra cubicle.

Shallan · 07/06/2014 21:15

I wouldn't rent it. You can probably find somebody but it will impact the price you can charge.

Pumpkinpositive · 07/06/2014 21:16

That is a hell of a leap you've made there, Fideliney.

Fraid that's how I read the comment as well. Fideliney, you are not alone. Grin

I work, and I don't need a shower. I take a bath.

Pumpkinpositive · 07/06/2014 21:18

OP, if you have a family, doesn't that mean there will be quite a queue for a bath? Do you only have one bathroom? What about separate toilet?

I think what you describe could be potentially limiting as to tenants. I love baths, and it would put me off.

Laquitar · 07/06/2014 21:23

I prefer showers. If i had to have baths i could just about tolerate it if only family members used it. If other people used the bath i would have to wash it very well before i use it.

Shower over bath is fine.

RebeccaCloud9 · 07/06/2014 21:25

Why would anyone hate a shower? Just curious as I can't see how that's possible!

BTW I like having the option. I shower every morning before work (wouldn't have time for a bath) but have a relaxing soak in a bath every now and again. However, if I was renting a room and everything else was right, I would make do.
