Antibiotics again?

Dd1 has had very badly ingrowing toenails for 3-4 months now. She walks on the outsides of her feet as they are so painful and swollen.

In April she had to have them lanced and drained at hospital then they had to be redressed with iodine dressings every few days at GPS.
They got infected again very badly and she needed a 10 day course of antibiotics, it helped but as soon as she stopped they became infected again but worse.

The gp said to bathe them every day in salty water, push the skin back so the nails grow out and to apply antibacterial cream which we have.

Dds toes are red, hot, throbbing and sore again. I asked the gp if the nails can just be sorted out and removed from where they are digging in but they said no that it will take months for them to grow out and gave dd another 10 day course of flucloxacillin. I don't want her on antibiotics all the time.

I think the dr should take this seriously and actually do something to help make them better-poor dd cannot walk properly!

AIBU to think they should not just mask the infection with anti b and instead get rid of the problem properly?

Have you thought of using maggots to treat the infection.

Glory be that sounds awful op .
Poor girl .
No idea what would help the feet , but a good probiotic would help the tummy with the antibiotic onslaught . Biogia are great - prescribed by a dr for my dd .

I don't know if dd would like that! She's terrified of anything bug like!

Poor thing is in agony though. The sides of the nails are clearly deeply embedded in her toes they are swollen and in a dreadful state. He anti b take the redness, pus and swelling away but as soon as they stop they get infected again.

I'd go and get the opinion of a chiropodist/podiatrist.

I'm worried she is damaging her feet and legs by walking on the outsides of her feet for the last couple of months, its worrying to watch her walking down the road like that.

Why oh why have I read that maggot document? Shock

fawltydoge · 05/06/2014 20:37

oh my goodness I have nothing to add except for POOR GIRL. ingrown toenails are terrible pain

steff13 · 05/06/2014 20:43

I agree with CerealMom, I'd go to a podiatrist. My husband had ingrown toenails, and the doctor completely removed the toenails and they grew back in normally.

I will try and make an appointment tomorrow for her to see someone as the gp really isn't helping.

I had terrible ingrown toenails as a teenager, I seem to remember wrapping them in iodine helped, it dyed my toes an odd colour but helped clear up the infection.

ikeaismylocal · 05/06/2014 21:16

I just saw she already has iodine, sorry!
