That Dsis partner has today allowed my DD(8) to play Call of Duty?

Seething at the moment so don't want to call Dsis and discuss as don't want to turn my DD's lovely day whilst I was at work into a row. DD is on Hterm and DD adores her so they have spent the day at Dsis house. Dsis is lovely but does not have any children so probably unsure of boundaries. However, wtf allowing an 8yr old to play an 18 rated game? I am not familiar with C.O.D so wanted opinions from those who have played/have experience of the game. AIBU? Is the game as bad as I fear? Dsis partner nice enough, and I am sure he meant well enough, but wwyd? Any advice gratefully received. Don;t want to go in all guns blazing but next time I want to be very clear about what is acceptable and never in a million years would I expect a grown man to think 18 rated games would ever be suitable for a child of 8. Thanks for reading!

I would be very cross. Quite a few grown men do seem to think COD is perfectly suitable for an 8 year old but it's one of the games DH is adamant neither of our DC will play until they are 18.

Others IME feel differently...

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 05/06/2014 19:46

I wouldnt be happy, however (and this doesnt excuse it), it isnt the worst option. Grand Theft Auto and id be round there screaning blue murder.

Some COD games are warzones, helicopters, hand grenades etc but essentially, shooting (to kill) games.

Id call your Dsis tomorrow and thank her for minding dd and say that whilst you are glad dd had such a lovely day, please could she bear in mind games and films etc and mindful of the fact that dd is nowhere near old enough to play 18cert games.

Then if it happens again, go in all guns blazing.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 05/06/2014 19:48

Yanbu. BIL let my 3 year old play GTA. I'm still fuming about it.

ManchesterAunt · 05/06/2014 19:50

I am not farmiliar with CoD exactly, but I do knpw there are some hideously gory games and it's possible to play on them 'nicely' for 5 minutes eith no guts.

Have you asked her what she did in the game? If she was sniping people and shooting them in the eyes, yanbu.

Ilovexmastime · 05/06/2014 19:52

Yanbu, I'd be angry too. I'd just thank her for having Dd and then say, but just for future reference, no 18 rated films or games please. Being me, I'd say this in as mild and non-accusatory tone as I could muster.

MmeLindor · 05/06/2014 19:53

I think that a lot of kids play this, so your sis and her partner may not have been aware that it wouldn't be ok.

Saying that, I would certainly have a word as it is certainly not suitable for 8yr old. I'd also chat to them about what you would find acceptable re films/TV that she can watch.

spence82 · 05/06/2014 19:56

COD is obviously quite violent as its a war game but if they played the online aspect then there is no bad language and no gore.

I wouldn't class it in the same league as GTA or anything like that

Watercolourfootballs · 05/06/2014 20:02

YANBU, however... I would consider 8 yo old enough to know she isn't old enough for an 18 (assuming she saw the box of course)

My DS has a friend who is allowed COD and 12 films. My DS knows he isn't allowed and will say so.

BelleateSebastian · 05/06/2014 20:03

I agree, I refuse to let my 9yo have COD but I turn a blind eye if he plays it at friends houses (there is a 16 rated one that some of his friends seem to have) ..... If he was playing GTA that would be another matter! It sounds a vile, vile game (stamping on prostitutes heads?!)

spence82 · 05/06/2014 20:12

Belle GTA is much more violent and kids shouldn't be playing it when it has an 18 certificate.

But not looking to start an argument about this but it annoys me that people use the prostitute thing like its a major part of the game when it isn't and I've never seen anyone complain about being able to beat up any other character whether they be male or female

Pradaqueen · 05/06/2014 20:21

Thanks for your replies they have helped me calm down. I agree GTA is worse from what I've heard but COD is still rated 18 for a reason I assume. They played on the Xbox so assume no box to see the rating but she is a trusting child so would not assume that she was being allowed to do anything she was supposed to do. Agree I will thank Dsis for having her but make it clear what is appropriate. Kicking myself for not doing so previously but guess never in a million years would I think it possible a grown man would consider playing a war game with a child. She seems to be not confused by what she saw and from what I can gain gently without making her feel she is in the wrong , she was a 'bit rubbish' at shooting. Don't think she has put anything into context at this point. DP bloody fuming though at the stupidity of it all! Off to drink wine and calm down...

YANBU Your DD should not be playing COD, however it was probably just DSis's partner being stupid rather than doing it deliberately IYSWIM

I would mention it to them and tell them not to do it again. I would also make sure your DD is taught to check these things herself. There is no reason she shouldn't be responsible enough to deal with this herself.

SallyMcgally · 05/06/2014 20:25

It's not OK. I let my 12 yr old play 16 rated games, but even he wouldn't be allowed an 18 and I was v cross when a friend's father told him he could come over and play GTA.

spence82 · 05/06/2014 20:26

Prada the 18 rating will be for the singla player campaign. If they were playing the multiplayer then its not graphic

Waltonswatcher1 · 05/06/2014 20:39

I would go into The Rage .
What is wrong with people?

Toizzy · 05/06/2014 20:40

I play cod.I wouldn't want my 8 year old to play it becaise the campaign is quite graphic and the online isn't suitable at all, not because of the actual playing that's actually not that bad, you dont see much. What's nasty is people's emblems and what they can say with a mic.

bubblegun · 05/06/2014 22:13

I would let an 8 yr old play it on multiplayer, it's not graphic and it's fun. Buy her sims to take with her next time.

Not suitable

Crap judgement

No excuse!

AElfgifu · 05/06/2014 22:48

It might not be an 18, not all COD versions are.

McPhee · 05/06/2014 22:52

Unless it was a U or a PG, then it wasn't suitable for an 8 year old. Common sense would tell you that!

StarGazeyPond · 05/06/2014 22:55

I expect a grown man to think

But I don't expect, as a childless man, he did, did he?

AElfgifu · 05/06/2014 23:00

I'm sure it wasn't U or PG. Just saying it might not have been 18, and the bit she saw might not have been so bad. You would hope.

Mrsjayy · 05/06/2014 23:08

I would be angry and would be saying why some people allow under age gaming I never did, there is swearing violence in cod

browneyedgirl86 · 05/06/2014 23:31

I don't think your sister not having any children herself has any bearing on this. Before I had mine I would never have let
My nieces and nephews play a game with a 18 certificate. It's common sense. My nephews have been playing gta since they were three and I strongly disagree with it. COD whilst not as bad as GTA is still not a suitable game for a child.
