to want to quit my job because of this?

I've worked for the same company for 8 years, for the last 4 years part of my job has been to cover for the accounts manager when she's on holiday/off sick etc.

She has been off now for 3 weeks after an operation and is expected to be off for at least another 10 weeks. I have spent the last 3 weeks covering her work and have hsd no problems doing so. However, the boss has now decided to advertise for another person to come and help. He did tell me he was doing it, but made it sound like they would be taking over some of my work so that I can concentrate on the accounts.

The advert was placed today - he is basically advertising for an accounts manager Angry I haven't spoken to him about it yet, I've been stressing about it so much that I daren't bring it up because I know I'd say domething I'd regret.

It looks to me like he doesn't trust that I am actually capable of doing the job, despite the fact I have spent the past 3 weeks doing it well and showing him how to do stuff as well. I actually don't want to go to work tomorrow, aibu in thinking I should just desperately hunt for other jobs and take the first thing im offered?

Can you apply for the job? Is it temporary?

It looks to me as if he wants to let you carry on with your actual job.

WooWooOwl · 04/06/2014 22:15

If you're doing your colleagues job, then who's doing your job?

Is the advert for a permanent position?

Could you apply for the accounts job?

MagpieMama · 04/06/2014 22:19

I would speak to your boss before making any big decisions. Do you normally have a good relationship?

APlaceInTheWinter · 04/06/2014 22:22

You seem very upset but I don't think your boss meant to upset you and I don't think the advertised post is any reflection on your abilities. I'm guessing the cover you've been providing isn't in your contract. In that case, it's more likely that, for employment law reasons, he has to advertise the exact post that requires cover ie he can't advertise your post because you're in it. To do it any other way, he would have had to officially second you to the Account Manager post then advertise your post for replacement cover.

He probably thinks he's helping you by removing the extra burden.

I can understand how you feel however desperately taking the first job you can get even if it's a step down would be shooting yourself in the foot. Try to calmly make the case to your boss for you to take on more responsibility, or even move into this new role, based on your record. If after considering your options you still want to leave, look for a suitable position but don't burn any bridges because you will need a reference from your employer. The job security of being with the same employer for 8 years is important, it's not easy to find another job in this economy, don't screw up your CV.

paxtecum · 04/06/2014 22:24

How can you find time to do your work and the accounts manager's work?
Maybe your boss wants you to concentrate on your job.

Pimpf · 04/06/2014 22:25

Maybe you should try talking to him! Have you said that you're happy to carry on for the next 10 weeks doing 2 jobs? Do you want to change roles? What makes you think that any new job will be better?

Don't take it personally, he needs someone to do you colleagues job and he needs you to do yours. Your colleague might need to take longer off and not told you. Take a deep breath and relax, sounds like you're doing too much!

Joysmum · 04/06/2014 22:26

How about asking for a secondment to do the accounts managers job and that they advertise for a temp to do your job?

DippyEggNSolders · 04/06/2014 22:27

YABU

There's a big difference to covering the odd sick day or planned holiday, to covering a period of potentially more than 10 weeks.

It sounds like he needs a temp to cover the job.

Speak to him. Explain you'd like the opportunity to fill the job, and could your job be covered by a temp. I'd be really concerned if you could do that job and your other one to full capacity (and would be considering reducing head count if that was the case)

Resigning over this would be foolish. Your boss is thinking of the longer term, as well as the immediate need to cover 1 persons job, which is currently being covered by you, who already has a job.

mouse26 · 04/06/2014 22:46

most of my 'original job' was passed on to other people when I started the accounts assistant role 4 years ago. I have been able to cover both my job and the accounts work because I already did quite a lot of it anyway, really its been easier for me to do both roles together because a lot of it is linked so theres been no waiting for one thing to be done by the accounts manager before I can do my bit and vice versa.

I know it would be foolish to walk. they have always been a good employer before and I may just be overthinking it. I will speak to him, and if all else fails I might just apply for it myself Smile

Seems a bit silly that you have to apply for a job you're already doing but sounds like your actual job role is somewhat undefined and you don't really have a clear position within the company so I can see why you're concerned.

mouse26 · 05/06/2014 10:04

I've spoken to him this morning and have apparently been worrying over nothing. I will still be continuing the same jobs i've been doing for the last three Weeks, the new person will be just helping out in general Grin thanks for your replies
